Cover 3 is a great podcast for those that are looking for a good one.
Bud Elliott observed that the quality of the players in the portal is significantly down from the prior two years. He noted that in his conversations with coaches that the view was that as a result of the house settlement, a lot of schools that previously had little to no NIL money now have the money to keep their best players. As a result of everyone having a good amount of money, the top guys are less likely to enter the portal. It's one thing when one school is offering $200K and the current school is offering $10K, but if it's now a difference of $250 vs $325, other factors come into play -- the education, the comfort with the school, etc.
The thought is that the house settlement will not kill the portal but will once again lead to the emphasis of high school recruiting and development. You may be able to plug a key hole or 2 in the portal, but you're not going to portal in a huge infusion of talent barring exceptional circumstances (coach leaving).
This probably portends well for Michigan which really embraced the portal as a supplement to high school recruiting. This year many speculated that Michigan would be a huge spender in the portal and it seems we're following our 2022 and 2023 approach. Moore really seems to be attacking high school recruiting. We continue to keep almost everyone we want out of the portal from our own roster. We will see what happens with Dusty May in year 2, but it seems that the huge portal haul last year was an aberration and not how he wants to build the core of the roster.
