My understanding is the B1G has explained that the call was on a Northwestern player but there was a mixup. Ok, let’s look at that.
An official threw the flag. Even if he relayed the information to the crew chief incorrectly....
- the ball had been advanced I believe 38 yards so it had to be brought back those 38 yards.
- the ball was then marked back 10 yards for the penalty.
- the crew chief announced via the stadium public address system the penalty was on number 22 for Michigan.
And through all that the official who made the call never stepped forward to correct the error. He never said, “Wait a second, that’s wrong.”
It’s amazing that the explanation makes the officiating crew look even worse than the original call made them look.
