Starting with football recruiting …
First, last week’s five-star update on five-star safety Daxton Hill, Rivals.com’s No. 1 safety prospect.
FIVE-STAR UPDATE
The coaching staff is confident in their abilities and feel like they've done a great job with Hill, and will continue to battle some of college football's big boys and the hometown school for his services. Hill recently tweeted the he'll be announcing his commitment soon, but the Michigan coaches are hoping that he'll be on campus on July 28 for the BBQ at The Big House and already have him marked down as an official visitor on Sep. 15 for the SMU game, which coincides with Hill's bye week
Getting elite kids out of Oklahoma is tough, and it proved to be when it came to just an unofficial visit. Hill will visit Oklahoma instead for its recruiting event July 28 … this one is starting to peak, and it would have been nice to get him on campus once more.
Still, U-M is right there. Hill likes the Michigan coaching staff and the depth chart and thinks he can make an immediate impact on Don Brown’s defense.
As has been reported, four-star Wandale Robinson out of Kentucky, a four-star athlete, had an outstanding visit to Michigan and recently placed the Wolverines in his top six with of Alabama, Kentucky, Nebraska, Ohio State and Purdue. He is planning an unofficial to Alabama July 28 and will make either Kentucky or Ohio State his last official.
Bama looms large, obviously. As of right now, however, Kentucky might be the greatest threat. The Wildcats have done a great job selling him on how he’d be used in their offense and how important he is to the program as an in-state recruit.
In the state of Michigan, U-M once appeared to be very interested in Detroit Martin Luther King four-star safety Marvin Grant, before eventually cooling on him late last fall and into the winter. Grant wound up committing to Purdue on June 1, once again causing fans to ask why Michigan didn’t show more interest in him.
A similar occurrence happened recently with class of 2020 Oak Park (Mich.) High four-star offensive guard Justin Rogers. The No. 16 overall player in the country revealed that U-M was his No. 3 school at a football camp in mid-May, and the Wolverines seemed to be in a good position for him.
He then released a top 13 list just two weeks later on June 5, and Michigan was curiously nowhere to be found.
Both Grant and Rogers were together at late June’s Rivals Five-Star Challenge in Atlanta, and were asked about the up-and-down relationships they had with U-M. Both gave the exact same answers.
“They just kind of stopped recruiting me,” each said almost simultaneously.
“I don’t know why they do that,” Grant said. “The communication just wasn’t there after a while. It seems like them and Iowa both do that quite a bit.”
Rogers nodded in agreement. This obviously confirms that it was Michigan who ended things with the two four-stars, and not the other way around.
One other player that U-M has seemingly cut ties with in the 2019 class is Austin (Texas) James Bowie four-star receiver Elijah Higgins. Higgins was also present at the Rivals Five-Star Challenge, and at 6-3, 215, was one of the more impressive physical specimens.
He agreed to discuss U-M for an interview, but cut it short just two questions in, laughing and saying, ‘I actually don’t want to do this anymore.’
It was a bit odd at the time, but Higgins later revealed that he really hasn’t heard from Michigan, and that there just wasn’t much to talk about.
More recruiting …
Michigan’s 2017 on-field struggles have certainly haven’t helped recruiting, but it became evident at the Rivals Five-Star Challenge that interest from the Wolverines still carries a ton of weight with kids.
Three elite prospects in the 2020 class — Upland (Calif.) High five-star outside linebacker Justin Flowe, Houston North Shore five-star running back Zachary Evans and Scottsdale (Ariz.) Saguaro four-star athlete Kelee Ringo — were each asked specifically about receiving their respective offers from Michigan, and their upbeat body language was obvious while discussing the Wolverines.
All three said very positive things about U-M (as is almost always the case with recruits), but the body language allows one to really get a sense for their true emotions.
All three lit up from ear to ear when the word ‘Michigan’ was first brought up, and all were quite animated while discussing the Wolverines. Flowe was actually the most animated of the bunch, unable to hide the smile from his face while talking about how much he’d like to visit Ann Arbor.
An elite season on the field in 2018 would do wonders on the recruiting trail, and would likely bring U-M back to the level it was on when it compiled consecutive No. 4 classes in 2016 and 2017 classes.
More recruiting …
When class of 2020 Columbus (Ohio) Northland three-star wide receiver Kalil Branham committed to Michigan on June 19, many wondered how much Ohio State had been a factor in his recruitment. His head coach, Brian Staats, revealed that Branham — despite living in Columbus — actually had his heart set on Michigan for a while, and that added interest from the Buckeyes probably wouldn’t have made a difference.
“Ohio State showed some interest,” Staats said. “They wanted him to camp, but his mind and heart were set on going up North. Ohio State never offered — my sense was that they were probably going to though.
“I don’t think it matters anymore, because he’s all in at Michigan. He and Al Washington had a conversation before Kalil committed, and Kalil told him that he’d commit as soon as they offered, which is exactly what happened. He also told Al that he won’t go to anyone else’s camp or campuses, and that he’ll be done as a recruit.”
The U-M coaches have received a bit of criticism from fans over the past year or so regarding a perceived lack of communication between recruits and the staff at times, but Staats said that wasn’t the case at all with Branham.
In fact, he couldn’t have been more impressed with the way they handled things.
“They were good throughout the whole process,” he recalled. “They wanted to hear from my perspective on how Kalil was on and off the field, academically, work ethic and all those normal questions that go along with it.
“They did their due diligence and made sure he’s a guy who could be a difference maker for them. I didn’t have a lot of interactions with Coach Harbaugh, but we did text and talked on the phone for 10 or 15 minutes at one point. It was kind of a seal-the-deal kind of conversation, and he told me the whole offensive staff had watched his film and were excited about him. He was actually going to offer him sooner, but I told him that it would mean a bit more to Kalil if they did it in person, whether it be at the office or in the stadium.
“I also told Jim beforehand that he’s likely going to commit as soon as he offers. Jim laughed and just said how great that was to hear.”
Branham shows off his colors proudly.
“I actually tease Kalil all the time, because he wears a pair of slides with the Michigan ‘M’ on them to school, and I remind him he’s in Columbus, Ohio,” Staats continued. “He smiles and says, ‘these are good.’ I told Coach Harbaugh that too and he chuckled. Kalil is all in up there — it was pretty cool how it all went down.”
Four-star receiver Kyle Ford of Lutheran, Calif. was elite at The Opening recently. The 6-3, 195-pounder had 52 receptions, more than double the next receiver, and he is a candidate for five-star status.
For those who don’t pay close attention on the boards, this is a post a month ago from one of Ford’s family members … this one came just before a trip to Oregon.
A little update on Kyle Ford … Kyle avoids or ignores many calls and texts regarding recruiting. It wears on him and he is also always very busy.
He is pretty much down to Michigan and USC. Four of his earlier favorites have pretty much been eliminated, Notre Dame, Penn State, Florida & UCLA. He's taking an unofficial visit this weekend to Oregon, and an official later this month to Colorado. Colorado, because it was his first offer and he is doing out of respect, but he will not be going to school there. Oregon is a curiosity trip, but again, don't expect too much out of it. He WILL be taking an official to Michigan, but still has not settled on a date. No other officials are planned at this time, and they're not sure yet where they would want to go.
Kyle met Wilton Speight this past Monday, and he asked Speight about his experience at UM, and why he left. Speight said he loved it at Michigan and didn't have one bad thing to say about it. He also told Kyle that he loved Harbaugh and he loved the area, but it was his last shot to play, so he transferred to UCLA. That was nice of Speight to take time to talk with Kyle and give him positive feedback on his Michigan experience, and it sure didn't hurt for Kyle to hear all that.
How this season goes with the offense and how good the QBs are for Michigan is going to factor greatly into Kyle's decision. Playing with a good QB is very important to him, so hopefully the back-ups get some playing time so Kyle can see what they might be like. Distance from California does not seem to be a big deal to him
.
But Brandon [Brown] is not wrong or right in predicting USC, because local influences are tough to ignore. However, I see Kyle's dad 2-3 times a week, and have drinks with him every Friday, and believe me, Michigan will be in it until the end, and they have a very good chance with Kyle. Al Washington and Harbaugh are doing a good job with his recruitment and everyone in his family likes them. I still like Michigan's chances very much, but as Brandon says, there is still a long way to go.
The Oregon visit went great, and it appears the Ducks are right there in the mix, as well. But U-M has really picked it up, and putting Washington on the case never seems to hurt. The guy is an elite recruiter.
Finally, much has been made about Michigan running backs coach Jay Harbaugh and his efforts on the recruiting trail, but recently he’s been on fire, helping land both four-star Zach Charbonnet and Eric Gray. Both players’ coaches talked very highly of the younger Harbaugh, saying the strong relationships he had developed with the backs was what ultimately helped U-M grab them.
Gray’s coach had much stronger prior connections with each of Gray’s other finalists, but the combo of Jim and Jay Harbaugh was too much for Alabama, Penn State or Texas A&M to beat.
It’s not just current recruits and their coaches that have talked highly of Jay Harbaugh, either. Several players in the 2020 class, including one of nation’s top backs, is enamored with Harbaugh and feels his relationship is best with him compared to any other coach — even though Michigan started recruiting him later than others.
Obviously, results at running back will need to be seen again on the field this year, but for now, fans can dial back the heat on Harbaugh. He’s earned it. He’ll also have St. Louis Trinity Catholic 2020 No. 94 running back nationally Mookie Cooper in July 28 for the BBQ at the Big House.
“They’re up there near the top,” Cooper said recently after a visit to Texas. “I’m not going to say the top, but they’re up there.”
Cooper recently visited Alabama and is scheduled to visit Michigan on July 28. A Notre Dame trip is also in the works, but he likes the Wolverines and has already visited once.

Just a few words on summer football …
We love what we’re hearing about the work being put in. No disrespect to the previous staff, but strength coach Ben Herbert has taken this to another level. We noticed it at the camps a few weeks back — guys just look different — and the culture is one in which everyone has bought in.
We’ve learned not to put too much stock into comments like “he’s a difference maker” or “this guy is the best in the business.” Players still have to make plays on the field. But this is going to be the best conditioned Michigan team we’ve seen in a long, long time.
As for the scholarship situation in 2018 … we’ve noted the Wolverines are currently over by one after giving kicker Jake Moody a scholarship. As of now, it appears a player could be moved to medical to get to the required 85.
We’ll keep an eye on this, but expect to hear more about it at Media Day in Chicago next week.

Finishing with basketball and recruiting …
The big news, of course, is an upcoming decision for five-star 2019 D.J. Carton. Carton finished his Ohio State trip Saturday morning, and it was a good one.
As we reported in our recent ITF EXTRA, however, Michigan seems to be in very good shape here.
At the same time, many of the national experts aren’t 100 percent certain. OSU paired Carton with friend and four-star Ohio State commitment Alonzo Gaffney on the trip, which was a wise move. The two roomed together at the NBA Players’ Association Camp this summer and really hit it off.
Of course, Carton is tight with Michigan four-star pledge Jalen Wilson of Denton (Texas) Guyer, too. The two play Fortnite together (for you old-timers, that’s a popular online game among the kids) and have become friends.
We asked someone close to Carton whether moving up his timeline (possibly even to this weekend, or maybe Monday) was good news for the Wolverines and got this response:
“Yessir.”
So that’s encouraging. There is no truth to the rumor, however, that this one has been "wrapped up for Michigan for some time" as some have floated on the inter webs.
We don’t believe the Wolverines will go more than one over in scholarships for 2019, so that would cap the class (for now). Glens Falls (N.Y.) four-star Joe Girard has struggled at Peach Jam — our Jacey Zembal said he was benched today — in keeping with his up and down summer, but he’s still in the mix.
And perhaps it was telling that no Michigan coaches were in to watch Mark “Rocket” Watts of Detroit Old Redford this morning. Some close to the four-star had been hopeful the Wolverines would pick it up, but they haven’t. Watts scored 43 with eight triples in a Peach Jam game this morning.
As for the team … we’ll have a report from practices early next week, but it’s clear this freshman class is going to be very, very good. There’s talk of playing small ball with Brandon Johns at the five (“his stroke is pure,” head coach John Beilein told us last week) and that’s proving to be true, and five-star Canadian Ignas Brazdeikis is a future pro.
Junior center Jon Teske has been in Ann Arbor most of the summer, and the hard work has paid off. Beilein told us he loved how the team looked in some of the games in which Teske played extended minutes last year, and he’ll be counting on him for at least 25 minutes per game this year.
Beilein is also confident redshirt sophomore Austin Davis will provide some help. Some people just struggle to pick up the read and react offense, and he's one for whom it's taken a bit longer.
The flashes he showed last year and at the end of his freshman year, however, were real.
