Plenty of talk about if Harbaugh stays or goes not to mention the contract.
Realizing he has young kids, one of the attractions of Ann Arbor was stability. His kids are young enough where he would likely want at least another 10 years of this stability. I cannot see him wanting to uproot his family for an unknown. Even if he became the Lions coach, that still is far from a sure thing plus there is logistics of Allen Park.
I have to believe both Schlissel and Warde are happy with him. The biggest issue appears to be the big dollars he is getting paid for lackluster results. I can see a scenario where his contract does get renewed sooner than later but is structured for the current COVID situation as well as the long-term. I see zero chance where a guy in his mid-50's that has the drive he has (perhaps not to the level it was but it is still there), retires to make birdhouses or grow hydroponics. Klatt's RV comment is realistically 10 years away given his kids ages. I just feel, where we have been and the current climate of college football, Harbaugh in Ann Arbor is likely the best for all.
This would be my starting point of a contract:
Base salary (including his life insurance): $3,500,000
Win the B1G East: $1,000,000
Win the B1G championship: $,1,000,000
Win bowl game: $500,000
Playoff appearance: $1,000,000 (this takes into account even an expanded playoff)
Championship game appearance: $1,000,000
Win Natty: $1,000,000-$1,500,000
With this structure, he is paid like the big boys if he performs ($9,000,000+ for winning it all). If he doesn't, he is a run of the mill B1G coach, which is what he is now. I think people on all sides could live with this.
