Here are tonight's Blue Chips...
*** With former Michigan co-defensive coordinator Mo Linguist abruptly bolting to Buffalo, Michigan has tasked new safeties coach Ron Bellamy with running a lot of the recruiting damage. Of course, head coach Jim Harbaugh has made several calls, but it's been Bellamy that's led the way with top defensive backs on the board. Bellamy has been in touch with five-star Michigan commit Will Johnson and his father, Deon, and has eased concerns about the situation. Will is still hearing from other schools that are pushing for visits, but he wants to be at Michigan and is keeping close tabs on the Linguist replacement search. Will shared his thoughts on potential candidates with Bellamy over the weekend. Bellamy played a role in U-M closing with Will and has great relationships with Deon and others around Will's recruitment.
*** Bellamy also reached out to four-star defensive back Myles Pollard, who I felt was leaning Michigan before the Linguist departure. Bellamy's message was to stay the course and allow Michigan to find the right replacement for a guy that got a promotion. Pollard definitely has plans to do that and is still looking to make his official visit to Ann Arbor on June 11. Bellamy is also slated to talk to Pollard's father, Greg, at some point tonight if it hasn't happened already. I hinted at this in Into The Blue, but Pollard has expressed that he would love if Michigan hired Steve Clinkscale, who is leading the charge in his recruitment for Kentucky.
*** Obviously, one of Michigan's biggest fish this cycle is five-star Cordova (Tenn.) St. Benedict defensive tackle Walter Nolen. Linguist obviously had ties in the south and was involved in Nolen's recruitment, but Bellamy has definitely been more of a factor in this recruitment. Bellamy has been in contact with Nolen and his family on a weekly basis, and I actually don't think losing Linguist has too much of an impact. Bellamy has done a fantastic job here, and Nolen is still set to come in on June 18. I actually think losing Will or Kody Jones would hurt more than losing Linguist. Kody and his family, in particular, have known the Nolen family for a decade.
*** So that brings us to Kody Jones. The four-star prospect committed to Linguist without knowing very much about the program. Since then, Kody has familiarized himself with Michigan and has built a great friendship with Will. Bellamy reached out to Jones and let him know that Michigan still wants him in the class hence why Jones hasn't backed out of his pledge. Jones doesn't have any familiarity with the short list candidates other than Roy Manning, so I'm still concerned he's a flight risk. However, his father told me that they still love Michigan, and like Will, I know Kody is monitoring the search.
*** Lastly, I've talked a ton about Dillon Tatum over the last 24 hours. I will add that Bellamy had a positive conversation with the four-star West Bloomfield (Mich.) High athlete last night and is set to talk to his father this week. In an interesting turn of events, I'm told the Tatum family would like to see U-M go the NFL route — Tatum doesn't have great relationships with Clinkscale or Christian Hawkins. In this particular recruitment, Cory Robinson would be the family favorite.
