So, the speculation I've been reading for the reason Jim has not signed his extension is that he's waiting to see what NFL options come his way. And he's been roundly criticized because people think this is the reason. I'm guessing that's barking up the wrong tree.
CB said a while back that the contract negotiations "are complicated". We've also heard Jim was asked to take a pay cut and have a more incentives based contract. One of the reasons postulated was so that there would be more money available to hire good coordinators and assistant coaches. So, what if Jim and Warde have agreed on the contract with the pay cut and incentives, but that Jim wants to be sure Warde ponies up the money for the new hires he needs, and has given his verbal word that he'll sign if that's done. (An ex-president once said of dealing with the Soviets - "trust, but verify"). And now they're just finishing the final hiring and signings, with Jim's signing to be included. He could even tell potential coaches he wants that he's signed the contract but is withholding it pending the hiring of assistants being completed.
I doubt if this has anything to do with NFL positions that may/may not open up, and that the timing is just coincidental. And, it's been said that some of the desired coaches were still coaching in bowl games through this past weekend.
