A LITTLE MORE PERSPECTIVE ON THE NEBRASKA RECRUIT SITUATION . .

..that SpartansNation refuses to acknowledge.

Nebraska and Michigan are next scheduled to play in 2018. If the past few days in recruiting serve as an indication, the game can't get here soon enough.

After a weekend in Ann Arbor in which Jim Harbaugh's staff flipped the commitment of Florida defensive end Reuben Jones from Nebraska to Michigan, Daishon Neal on Tuesday poured fuel on the warm embers of a budding Big Ten rivalry.

Neal, a defensive end out of Omaha (Neb.) Central, accepted a visit Monday from Michigan defensive line coach Greg Mattison. Committed to Nebraska since April, Neal wavered in his pledged after Bo Pelini was fired in November. As Neal worked to establish a relationship with Mike Riley's new staff in Lincoln, he flirted with Oklahoma and Oregon in recruiting, ultimately eliminating both.

This week, on the heels of his official visit to Nebraska, Neal received an offer from Michigan.

Then on Tuesday, he reaffirmed his commitment to the Huskers in a radio interview with Sharp & Benning in the Morning on Omaha's KOZN 1620-AM.

In the process, Neal and his father, Abraham Hoskins Jr., ripped the Wolverines.

"They made one bad statement," Hoskins said of the Monday visit with Mattison, "and it ruined them. They said without football, Daishon wouldn't be able to go to Michigan -- like we couldn't afford to send him there or we couldn't get him [academically eligible].

"Once he said that, we pretty much escorted him out of the house."

Neal said Mattison "basically tried to call me stupid in front of my

A few things strike me:
Mattison and the Michigan coaches cannot respond until next week, when Neal signs with Nebraska. And by then, the Wolverines will have more important topics to address -- like their own class.
Interpret Mattison's purported comments as you wish. He wasn't necessarily insulting Neal. It's a fact Michigan is selective in the admission process and it helps a student's cause to receive a football scholarship. I doubt his statement was related to finances.
This feels a bit like Mattison walked into a trap in Omaha. Did Michigan really stand a chance here? Neal had an excellent visit to Nebraska over the weekend, by his own account, and the Huskers benefit from a victory -- perceived or real -- over Jim Harbaugh and the Wolverines in recruiting.

Most notably, less than a month into the Harbaugh era, things are going just as well as hoped.

We all know Harbaugh is going to make a run at Urban Meyer and Ohio State in the way he targeted USC's Pete Carroll while at Stanford.

Of course, Harbaugh will get under the skin of Michigan State fans.

A little bad blood with Nebraska is an excellent side story. It makes sense, too.

Nebraska running backs coach Reggie Davis coached for Harbaugh with the 49ers for the past four years. Harbaugh's son, Michigan tight ends coach Jay, worked as an undergraduate assistant for Nebraska's Riley at Oregon State.

Harbaugh, in fact, played late in his NFL career for Riley with the Chargers.

The Huskers and Wolverines figure to coach with similar philosophies and covet many of the same recruits.

In fact, they're battling for another. Tight end Matt Snyder of San Ramon, California, a Nebraska pledge, visited Michigan last weekend.

Home visits from both schools to Snyder are scheduled for this week. Expect a little more sparring.

Now, if only the Big Ten could do something about that four-year wait until they play again.

Why do you care so much about what some random Spartan fan said? Let him have his glory...in one year and out the other. Regardless of what happened, it does not matter because the kid ain't coming to Michigan and that's fine anyway. I don't think recruiting talent starting in 2016 is going to be an issue for JH - this year will be tough, but fortunately we are loaded with 4/5 star talent on both sides of the ball for the next 2 years (look at our depth chart) and if JH can develop them, he will do well.

Chill ok.
I'm just trying to bring out the facts that he wants to ignore, to try and make UM look bad.
Why do you care so much that I care so much?
Don't try to put me on blast.

Cry me a river crybaby Daishon and your father

Guess what, I got a rejection letter from Central Michigan University, they said I was too stoopid to attend Central. Oh well, my degree says Western Michigan University. But for pride you now are going to play for the obsure Nebraska program, good luck and best wishes.

Would you have preferred to go to CMU, or was it just about the same for you to go to WMU? I've always liked CMU. My cousins boy is in his first year there now. He's going to try out for the football team next year though. Also a guy a went to high school with went there, and I think his first year there he broke a few track records.

My sister went to CMU a couple of years before me

Of course my three older bros graduated from Michigan but I wasn't a fan of homework in HS. Basically I just wanted to get away from home, filled out an app for CMU first, they laughably said no and so I got into WMU which is higher ranked and has a better reputation than CMU. I shed no tears nor did I whine that I couldn't get into CMU. This guy was likely told the truth that his grades and test scores wouldn't get him into Michigan and he was hurt. It's like okay, sorry we didn't lie to you, go to Nebraska, enjoy corn.

In the same interview Neal said he was a Michigan lean. Your guy really dropped the ball to go from that to out of the house in 10 minutes.

its well known Michigan greatly bends their admissions standards . . .

Jim Harbaugh called the University on this several years ago and it's never been a secret that the University wants to win so badly that they'll essentially admit anyone who can help them do that. Total. Non. Story.

Re: its well known Michigan greatly bends their admissions standards . . .

Almost every school in the nation has relaxed standards on student athletes, even Ivy League schools. It's more about what that prospective student can do for the university. Some smart kids are very successful in business and give back. Others are very good at sports and give back, and give the school positive press while attending the university (for the most part). Even Stanford's are relaxed, he said some things he regretted, and he's matured since then.

Oh good your back!

Harbaugh was quoted as saying tge players couldn't get hired after playing football at U of M...look it up...I'm sure you'll spin this like James Carville... Lol

Yes and he admitted he was wrong. Spartynation l certainly hope most of your fans aren't as clueless as you, since u are embarrassing MSU. Enjoy the run u guys are on and act like you've been there before.

there are $4miilion reasons he admitted he said he was wrong. Actually more like $25 million...see.. Your spinning things again.

actually, there are former players who are doctors and lawyers who prove he was wrong.

You're really one to talk. You spin things all the time to try and make JH and UofM look bad. You sound a lot like your own coach who constantly whines about things and expects an apology every time someone in Ann Arbor sneezes. As usual your pathetic. How old are you really?

Kern you're back!!!!

Where did you go hiding off too for so long? Quick question: Do you think it is even remotely possible that Jim Harbaugh will become the next Michigan football coach?

In the end, the joke's on Neal, who now has to play for a lousy coach for 4-5 years, instead of one of the top coaches in all of football. Well done Daishon. Well done! Still laughing hysterically that Nebraska hired Mike Riley. Not one for browsing much, huh? LOLOLOL

Just stopped by to see what was going on. I think the OP is right, there's a brooding rivalry developing with us. It probably actually goes back to the '97 debate. We will never reach the level of the OSU/UM rivalry but the games we play from here on out will be a rivalry game no doubt.

As for Riley, I think you're overlooking the fact that he was asked by his alma mater, Alabama, to be their coach and was sought by USC to be theirs, TWICE. I don't know anyone who thinks he's anything but a great coach. He has taken a different route in his career for personal reasons but finally decided to take the plunge with Nebraska and go for the gold.

At least Jim Harbaugh respects him greatly. "Harbaugh said of Mike Riley in October of 2007, when Stanford was preparing to play Oregon State. "When you try to think of the top five people you know in this world, there's no doubt about it that Mike Riley is in that top five. He's just a tremendous person," Harbaugh said. "Knowing coach Riley is knowing how well our team is going to have to be prepared to be in a position to compete with his ballclub."

We'll see how good the decision was to hire him. I know he's killing it in recruiting right now for having a late start. Oh, and he was 2-2 against Harbaugh at OSU.
