They were not only fiercely competitive on the field, but on the recruiting trail as well. There was no media coverage or publishing of in-home visit schedules. One night Bo and Woody both arrived at the house for a visit with the same Ohio recruit. There ensued an argument about who would go in and make his pitch first. They both wanted the last word with the player and his parents. Finally, Bo said all right I will go first. Woody was happy--at first. He got his way or so he thought. Each coach had one hour. Near the end of Bo's pitch, he and the recruit went out the back door of the house and disappeared into the night. Woody was furious. There is a lot of Bo in Jim.

As Chris Spielman has revealed, he really wanted to go to Michigan, but his father would have none of it. Dad was a loyal Buckeye and did not want to receive all the fury of fans and friends. When Spielman was on his last visit and he told Bo he was committing to OSU, Bo told him something like son, this is a big mistake -- you will never win a game against Michigan in your entire four years. And he never did.
