Up 6 shooting a FT with 16 secons left should be virtually un-loseable if
one fouls. At that point, we could have fouled their worst shooter too, they were only 6-10 for the game. Make NW beat you by 6 pts from the line in less than 16 seconds. Not gonna happen...
Normally JB will foul. He just either chose a calculated risk...
or wasn't paying attention.
Not worried about this at all. I am more worried about his automatic 2 foul benching regardless of circumstances in the 1st half. That is troublesome going forward. Even if he had a talented roster including depth...it shouldn't be etched in stone.
KenPom's comprehensive study of being up 3 and whether to foul or not suggested there is no difference in your W/L chances by fouling or making them take a 3. You win about 93% of the time either way.
People like to make the academic argument that fouling is a wise idea. Unfortunately kids don't implement it as well as NBA players do. They too often foul a guy in a shooting position or foul too soon and give them time for more possessions, etc. Also worth pointing out that we aren't exactly the strongest rebounding team in the world so it's not a given we'd rebound a missed FT.
And in the first OT with seconds to go, if the ref would have called the NW player for stepping on the line before he threw the pass that Demps then got and hit the 3 to tie, Michigan would have probably won the game.
you shouldn't intentionally foul an 85% FT shooter. That was hilarious!
Almost as good as --- after missing so so so many free throws --- trying to miss one and actually making it, thus forcing Izzo to his knees and praying to the dear lord.
