Very off topic: for the past year or so, I’ve been putting together materials to write a piece of non fiction. Completely unclear as to whether this is something someone would read (though I hope some would!). That’s beside the point.
I’ve arrived at a juncture where I need to start planning to actually talk to people and get them on the record. The only thing I’ve ever published is an obscure law review note, so I don’t have any credibility banging on someone’s door saying “hey, @Sovereign_Immunity here. I’m writing a book on this. Talk to me.” I have a feeling a ton of people will just tell me to eff off.
My question: is it common for lesser known (unknown in this case) authors to come to some sort of an agreement with a publisher so the author can say “I have a book deal with Random House, you should talk to me.”?
I’m just envisioning a million roadblocks if I simply bang on someone’s figurative door telling them I’m writing a book.
Any advice is appreciated.
