…………to the remnants of the Hoke era and welcome the Harbaugh era. Unlike the 2015 and 2016 teams, which were dominated by Brady Hoke recruits, the 2017 edition of the Wolverines will see the emergence of players recruited by Jim Harbaugh. We are talking about his first “half-cycle” in 2015, a relatively small class, and the two huge classes of 2016 and 2017. Below is a provisional depth chart I have put together. Please note that many of the walk-ons listed may not even be in program for this season. We need to see the roster once it is released. Also, after listing the starters there is a lot of “guesswork” with respect to back-ups at many positions. There are simply too many young players and too many battles going on to put together anything more concrete. Things are always fluid early in fall camp, but especially this season with arguably the youngest team in Michigan football history about to take the field.

Key:

5: Fifth year senior

R: redshirt

3: Junior eligibility

2: Sophomore elgibility

1: Freshman eligibility

pw: Preferred walk-on

w: Walk-on

QB Wilton Speight 3r Running first and it will be a huge surprise if he is not the starter.

Brandon Peters1r Has had his moments and continues to impress, but must continue to become more of a vocal leader. Has the best skills among the veteran QBs, but lags behind Speight in his reads and adjusting to complicated defensive schemes.

John O'Korn 5t Solid reserve QB. Splitting reps with Peters for number two QB spot.

Dylan McCaffrey 1 High football IQ, heady player, absorbs info in team meetings like a sponge. Very skinny and must get stronger. No need to burn his redshirt as a frosh.

Alex Malzone 2r My guess is that he will graduate transfer after this spring and just three years in the program (Kudos to him if he can get a degree in just 3 ½ years).

Michael Sessa 2pw Tall and lanky PWO QB who played with Ian Bunting as a prep

Garrett Moores5w

Tristan Hughes 1pw

TB Chris Evans 2 Our lost talented back. Being pressured by Higdon, but I suspect that he will emerge as the go-to back when all is said and done

Karan Higdon 3 Will form a solid one-two punch with Evans. Those two will probably get 80% of the carries

Ty Isaac 5 Huge back with a nice burst but has never showed the toughness to live up to his five-star billing. Will get some quality touches but too early to say if more than a year ago

Kareem Walker1r Good size, runs tough between the tackles, frosh academic issues are now behind him. Probably won’t live up to his high school billing when all is said and done as elite RBs emerge early

O'Maury Samuels 1 A frosh I like a lot. Must adjust to elite competition. Missed some early practices due to class schedule but there is no need to rush him un less he cracks top three in rotation. H has the talent to do so, but I suspect he will be redshirted

Tru Wilson 2pw PWO from Warren De La Salle who had his moments in the spring

Kurt Taylor 1 High character program player who is built like a mini-tank but lacks wiggle

Joey Hewlett 3rpw Son of Rich

FB Khalid Hill 5 Getting back into shape after being a bit pudgy in the spring. Versatile fullback who will be more involved in the passing game this season while continuing to be the red zone go-to guy

Henry Poggi 5 Quality number two fullback with a high football IQ

Ben Mason 1 Strongest kid on the team as a frosh, and he isn’t even a lineman. Moved early in spring from ILB. Hits like a truck. Will see some time this year and should start in 2018

Jared Wangler 3r Moved from LB to FB in camp. Makes sense as he was nowhere to be seen on LB depth chart but there is a chance for him to contribute at FB in 2018 if he is even invited back for a fifth year

Nick Volk 4w

Joe Beneducci 4w

Brian Chu 4w

Spencer Dickow3w

Tyler Plocki 1pw Parents coach at Michigan

IR Grant Perry 3 Heady player who runs solid routes and is in the right place at right time. May be passed up down the road by higher ceiling youngsters

Eddie McDoom2 Made his mark on sweeps as a frosh. Can he transition to catching the ball consistently well. In danger of being passed up by frosh

Nate Johnson 2 Small but quick and exciting slot receiver who should make his mark primarily as a punt returner this season

Oliver Martin 1 Really impressing in early fall drills. Could have the highest upside among all the inside receivers. Athletic, more quick than fast. Like him a lot

WR Tarik Black 1 Early indications are that he could be our go-to receiver as a true frosh. A prep AA but still highly undervalued. Best bet to lead the team in receiving as a frosh

Donovan Peoples-Jones1 Can he stay healthy? The most touted of the frosh receivers and an explosive athlete. May have highest ceiling of all receivers on the team and a smart kid.

Nate Schoenle 2pw Tall and athletic PWO who is challenging for rotation time. Numbers crunch could squeeze him out but could be a pleasant surprise

Kerrick Hahn 2pw

Jack Young 1pw

Jake McCurry 1pw

Austin Brenner 4w

Jacob West 3w

Evan Latham 1pw

WR Kekoa Crawford2 Best true receiver of the second years guys and, just as importantly, a sound blocker. Not as flashy as others but has a solid all-around game and quietly putting himself in a position to have a fine soph season

Maurice Ways 3r High character kid who is a hard worker. Good size and ball skills. Lacks burst. In a battle for minutes, and the result may dictate if he is invited back for a fifth year

Nico Collins 1 Passes the look test with flying colors. Gotta love his length. High ceiling, both literally and figuratively. Would love to redshirt him or at least one of the other frosh receivers but they ALL may be too good to keep off the field. THAT is a scary thought

Jack Wangler 5pw Son of former U-M QB John and older brother of Jack. Need to check and see if he is on the roster as fifth-year walk-on

Daniel Jokisch 2pw Farther, Dan Sr., and uncle, Paul, played at Michigan

Cedric Mutebi 2pw

Jake Martin 2pw

Brendan White 3w

TE Ian Bunting 3r Light is starting to turn on for Bunting. A window is there for him to shine with Butt gone and the other TEs still on the young side. Must improve blocking

Sean McKeon 2 Coaches love this kid (as do the women). Solid all-around skills and quietly plugging away and putting himself in a position to break out as a soph

T.J. Wheatley 2r Passes the look test. Looks like Tarzan, but sometimes blocks like Jane. The latter must improve for him to make an impact but for now I am dropping him below McHugh

Zach Gentry 2r Flex TE who should see time in mutli-TE formations. Long, fast, good ball skills. Must improve blocking, a common theme among our TEs

Nick Eubanks 1r Tall and athletic. Oozes with potential as a receiver. Must fill out and improve blocking

Connor Edmonds 2pw

Dane Drobocky2pw

Chris Hanlon 1pw

Kenneth Ferris 3w

Joseph Files 3w

C Patrick Kugler 5 Holding a slight edge for the starting center spot over Ruiz. Will he still be starting come November? A leader on the OL.

Cesar Ruiz 1 Listing him at number two center but also pushing Onwenu at OG. Could be starting by mid-season. A special young talent.

Andrew Robinson 4w

Camaron Cheeseman 2pw

Bradley Deeg 3w

Matt Baldeck 1pw

G Michael Onwenu 2 Has lost weight and improved mobility. Solid camp thus far. Does he have conditioning to be effective in Q4? If not, could he rotate with Ruiz, Spanellis and/or Filiaga?

Stephen Spanellis 1r A favorite of Doug Skene. Doesn’t get all the press but has a nasty demeanor and is a solid finisher. Could sneak into the OL rotation.

Greg Froelich 5pw Unsure if returning for fifth year as a PWO

Sean Fitzgerald 1pw

G Ben Bredeson 2 Already a leader on the line as a soph. Could also flip to OT if one of the young guards impresses. Future pro.

Nolan Ulizio 2r another kid who is getting looks at both OG and OT. Road-grader. Missing time in spring put him behind the curve and with influx of young talent I don’t know is he will catch up

Ja'Raymond Hall 1 Quick and athletic lineman who could get looks at guard or tackle. Looked good in spring but needs a redshirt year to get stronger. Nice future once that happens

Anthony Kay 2pw

Jesse Speight 1pw Younger brother of Wilton

T Mason Cole 4 Already a senior. Kid has seen the worst of times, and now the best of times. Final legacy of one of the worst offensive line groups in Michigan history, but he was just a frosh back then. Future pro and team leader.

Chuck Filiaga 1 Getting reps at both guard and tackle. Very strong and physically ready to play. Question is whether he is there technique-wise? Good chance to make top 8 OL rotation

Andrew Stueber 1 A kid I like a lot and will be a starter sometime in the future. Undervalued recruit who even has a chance to see time this season, although a redshirt here would help

Andrew Vastardis 2pw Pretty talented underclass PWO. Powerful road-grader who could get some time this season

T Jon Runyan Jr. 2r In a battle with JBB for the OT spot opposite Cole, although there is a chance Filiaga could steal the spot or Bredeson could slide to tackle to make room for Ruiz/Spanellis/Filiaga at guard. Still early in camp and the OL is obviously stil in flux other than Cole and Bredeson

Juwan Bushell-Beatty 3r Battling Runyan in a make or break year for JBB. If he doesn’t crack the rotation highly unlikely he is invited back for year five.

Joel Honigford 1 The least college-ready of the frosh OLs, but we knew that when he signed. Good length and quick feet. Much like Mayfield and Hayes next year he will have the luxury of sitting a few years and growing into his body.

Greg Robinson 2pw

Grant Newsome 2r Will redshirt this season but reportedly his rehab is coming along fine. Would be a huge bonis for him to reclaim a starting spot in 2018, a season when the OL should finally stack up with the great OLs of the past

NT Bryan Mone 3r Finally healthy and playing like it. Could really break out this season and probably the most realistic player on the tam to possibly declare early for the draft. If he plays up to his potential this DL will be devastating

Aubrey Solomon 1 Has really come on strong now that the pads have been strapped on and emerged as the number three Dt in the rotation. Possible future All-American and living up to his five star rating at this early stage

James Hudson 1 Good size and athleticism. Have not heard much about him this fall. Expectations were high entering fall drills. Some feel he could be even better on the OL. With Jeter coming on strong and moving to three-tech could a move to the OL be in the works?

Deron Irving-Bey 1 Athletic but raw. Needs a redshirt. Could also project on offense. Have not heard anything about his camp performance.

Phillip Paea 1 Another kid who could also project on the OL. Yet to heard about his camp performance

Salim Maskki 4tw

DT Maurice Hurst 5 One of the nation’s best DTs. Should have a dominant season

Michael Dwumfour 1r Prep late-bloomer who did a lot of growing late in his high school career. Injured much of frosh season but impressing in summer drills. Looks like a solid second-teamer who could get rotation minutes

Donovan Jeter 1 Has eaten his way into a three-tech. Up to about 290 and has followed up his impressive spring with a solid early summer camp. Could work his way into the rotation. Future is bright.

Lawrence Marshall 3r Looking more and more like this will be his final season as a Wolverine-as youngsters are passing him up. Kudos to Josh Helmholdt for calling this back when he committed to Michigan.

Carl Myers 2pw Pretty solid PWO

SDE Rashan Gary 2 Has the potential to be the best DL to play at Michigan the past fifty years. Special player ready for a special season.

Carlo Kemp 1r Very impressive back-up to Gary. Tough, high football IQ and aggressive. Future pro who will be one of top six DLs in rotation this year

Ron Johnson 1r Moved back to DE and is supposedly up to over 280. High character kid. Mo Ways of the DL, for better or for worse.

Jack Dunaway 3pw Son of Craig. Still on the team?

Carter Selzer 1pw

Ryan Veingrad 1pw

WDE Chase Winovich3r Has gotten a lot stronger and now more than just a pass rusher. Watch for him to have a hug season. Reminds me of a young John Anderson

Luiji Vilain 1 Quick-twitch DE who plays well enough in pace to possibly even see time at LB. Could shine in pass rush role this season

Kwity Paye 1 Raw but athletic and can run and play in space. Could also get looks at LB. Will he redshirt? Too early to say but some coaches have been positive on him.

Reuben Jones 2r Will he play inside or out? Is he strong enough? Has he been passed up by younger talent?

Cheyenn Robertson 3pw

WLB Devin Bush 2 Short but vicious head-hunter. Reminds me of a young Ronald Simpkins

Michael Wroblewski 5w Nice-sized and physical walk-on LB who has worked his way into the ILB rotation. Best inside the box

Josh Ross 1 Hearing he could be the best of the tru frosh LBs, which is high praise indeed. Not sure where to list any of the tru frosh LBs on the depth chart at this early stage-all guesswork. Bigger, faster and stronger than his older brother

Jordan Anthony1 Another touted true frosh ‘backer who could make an early impact. Heard som good things on him early on in fall camp but nothing the past few days

Devin Gill 1r Passed up by others?

Jameson Offerdahl 3pw PWO and so of former NFL and WMU ‘backer John Offerdahl

Dontee Mauricio 3w

MLB Michael McCray 5 Team leader from his ‘backer spot. One of the best in the Big Ten

Drew Singleton1 Really looks good and fully recovered from his injury. Could challenge for time but too early top tell with the frosh ‘backers

Elysee Mbem-Bosse 1r Athletic but raw. Is he being passed up by the true frosh?

Matt Brown 1pw Stud PWO who was a prep All-American

Tommy Whitted 3pw

Alex Kaminski 4w

Adam Shibley 1pw

VIPER Khaleke Hudson 2 Not tall but strong, fast and a big-time hitter.-Should excel as the viper. Future pro.

Noah Furbush 3r Will see quality time in “large” LB packages. Good size but can also run

Jordan Glasgow2rw Will likely swing between viper and third safety after Kinnel and Metellu. Will see quality time and also excel again on special teams

Joshua Uche 2 I like hij a lot. Nice size and speed. Probably battling Furbush for rotation reps. Don’t let ghis low spot on my so-called depth chart fool you-all is still so very fluid after the starting ‘backers

Peter Bush 2pw

Adam Fakih 1pw

CB Lavert Hill 2 Has a razor thin lead at this early stage for a starting CB spot. Fast and excels in coverage, but needs to be more consistent.

Drake Harris 3r Truly a crapshoot for the back-up corner spots so listing the kids by experience. Former receiver who has great ball skills, great length and good speed. Basketball skills translate well to CB in terns of coverage, but needs to become more consistent and improve in run support. Nice ceiling but time is running out. If gets quality rotation minutes could be invited back for a fifth year. Ideal situation?-poor man’s Richard Sherman.

Keith Washington 2r Another tall corner who has been very consistent if not flashy this summer, following up on a similar spring.

Benjamin St-Juste 1 Yet another tall corner with very quick feet. May be in a position to redshirt him this season if he does not break into the top four at CB, but he has the skills to do so.

Taylor Krupp 3w

CB David Long 1r Probably the most likely corner to start. Thicke than Hill and has similar coverage skills. Should break out as a soph after being banged up a bit as a frosh

Brandon Watson 3r Seems like he has been around forever. In the mix for quality time and is a solid, if unspectacular, corner.

Ambry Thomas 1 Once he fills out he could be the best corner on the team. His coverage skills are there with the best but he must get stronger and become more effective against the run

FS Tyree Kinnel 3 Most experienced returnee in the secondary. Excels in run support, now needs to prove his mettle in coverage

Brad Hawkins 1 Great combination of speed, size and physicality. Could press for time as summer camp continues and he learns the playbook.

Jaylen Kelly-Powell 1 Solid all-around skills who is a bit of a safety/corner ‘tweener. Among our best coverage safeties and plays smart.

Tyler Cochran 2pw Son of former Michigan CB Brad Cochran

Hunter Reynolds 1pw

Jared Davis 1pw

SS Josh Metellus 2 Physical player who. Like kennel, excels in run support but must prove his coverage skills. Another kid who is much better than his prep rating.

J'Marick Woods1 Impressive in spring and early summer drills. Tall and physical safety who is best in run support (a trend here. Hopefully the safeties prove they can cover effectively as well)

Matt Mitchell 3rw

Louis Grodman3w

PK Quinn Nordin 1r Very strong leg. Will probably kick PATs and FGs. Unsure about KOs at this early stage

Ryan Tice 3w

Kyle Seychel 4w Returned in spring after having left the program a year ago

James Foug 3w

P Brad Robbins 1 One of the top 2-3 true frosh punters in the nation. Should fend off Hart, who is a high quality PWO

Will Hart 2pw Solid PWO punter who is a fine back-up

Ryan Tice 3w

James Foug 3w

Now, on to some recruiting thoughts.

Class of 2019

What a great start to the ’19 class with verbals from Charles Thomas (my number 9 LB in the nation), Stephen Herrron (my number 7 DL in the nation), Nolan Rumler (my number 7 OL in the nation) and Chris Hinton (my number one OL in the nation. Hinton is being recruited by Michigan as a DE, although I think he would make a better OL and will probably grow into a DT. He is a true difference-maker. The other three kids are all at last solid four star players. This is the best early start I have ever seen to a class and it should continue to get a lot better. It could end up being a class for the ages. The only thing that keeps me predicting such a class will be scholarship limits. Like the Class of 2018, the 2019 class will be limited in the number of kids we can sign and it will be a struggle to get to twenty signees. What could well define the ceiling for this class is the attrition that will occur over the next 24 months.

Below is my best guess class for the Class of 2019. Just a few comments.

First, at QB with J.T. Daniels off the board it will be interesting to see if Michigan starts to turn up the heat on Luke McCaffrey. UCLA and Ohio State seem to be the two schools that are pushing the most for him at this early stage. He has great positional flexibility but I think that he will be recruited as a QB when all is said and done. Curious to see if Stanford offers him. Would have much preferred Daniels committing to Stanford as it would have probably locked out a QB offer from them for McCaffrey. Michael Johnson Jr. is another kid to watch out for, but he may be a tough pull to get away from Oregon as his father is now on the staff there.

Second, a big-time RB in this class is a must unless something emerges out of thin air in the 2018 class. Good thing that Chris Evans has been a pleasant surprise, but this is the one position where Michigan has yet to land a high, high four or five star talent under Harbaugh. Crouch is the most realistic target for Harbaugh but Noah Cain is another kid with a strong Michigan interest. He is from Texas but is now at IMG Academy. He is actually originally from Baton Rouge. Most southern pundits seem to think he will therefore end up at either Texas or LSU but this recruitment has a long ways to go and I think they are just paying cursory attention to his legit interest in Michigan. I would be ecstatic to land either Cain or Crouch.

Third, Michigan does not seem to be strongly positioned with many elite receivers in this class including at TE. Kids not on my best guess list who we may have legit chances at include DeMatha WR DeMarco Hellams, Indiana WR David Bell and California TE Ethan Rae. Also a bit disconcerting at this early stage that Michigan is not too well positioned with elite TEs in the class. Austin Stogner has already committed to Oklahoma, Logan Lee to Iowa. Grayson Boomer, Ryland Goode, Isaiah Foskey and Keon Zipperer have early offers but we are not at this early stage among the leaders for any of them.

The Belleville kids- Devontae Dobbs and Julian Barnett. Barnett supposedly was injured during the Michigan camp so did not get a chance to perform for an offer. Dobbs is an outstanding talent but Michigan was slow to get on top of him and really pushed to catch up over the summer. He has not really reciprocated interest. To what extent that is a function of his buddy, Barnett, not being offered is unsure. GHowever, Barnett has also not been offered yet by Ohio State but Dobbs is showing the Buckeyes a lot of love. On September 1 Michigan can start to contact the kid directly. We will have a better sense this fall whether Michigan has a legitimate chance to get back involved with him once they are able to directly show him the love. Frankly, I am not optimistic on this front.

Class of 2020

This will be a much larger class than the 2018 and 2019 classes, so it should be a critical foundation for continuing to get the program at the level of Ohio State. Early indications are that it will be an outstanding class for Michigan. It is too early to put together a “Best Guess” list so below I have put together a “Watch List” of prospects where it is likely that there is strong mutual interest. I have placed an asterisk (*) in front of the players who are most likely to end up in the class.

Again, Michigan is very well-positioned on the OL. Moreover, it is a VERY strong year in New England. Stud OL Kevin Pyne and his cousin, Drew Pyne, are Connecticut natives with huge upsides. Michigan is already strongly postioned with Kevin. Tre Williams is another Connecticut native who is a big-timer. Kalel Mullings is a stud LB out of Massachusetts. Pyne and Myles Hinton are my top two offensive linemen in the class. Myles, of course, is the younger brother of Chris Hinton and also goes both ways. Justin Rogers is an in-stater and possibly the top overall prospect in the state. Tonky Hemingway is the younger brother of former Michigan WR Junior Hemingway. There are conflicting reports as to whether Michigan has already offered him. Earnest Sanders is the sopn of the former Michigan safety of the same name and is already making a name for himself in hoops. His highest upside, however, may be on the gridiron. Also, there are three pretty talented in-state receivers who will get serious looks from Michigan in Carr, another talented hoopster, Williams (OSU has already offered) and Stewart.
