I guess I’d be amazed if someone on the Michigan staff, maybe more than one, hasn’t been tasked to apply artificial intelligence to the program.

An obvious application would be offensive and defensive play-calling. But the use of AI in coaching individual positions seems just as obvious. It seems as though the skillful use of AI would save players endless hours of watching tape. It wouldn’t eliminate tape-watching completely, but it seems that AI could quickly and accurately summarize individual player tendencies in various time, play and field position combinations, just like team play-calling.

Has anyone heard of anyone on the Michigan staff beginning the study of and development of AI programs in game planning? If not, isn’t it about time to start? AI is going to be one of those tools where the early birds are going to get the worms before the other birds even leave the nest.
