Were the NCAA’s penalties assessed against Tennessee inadequate or adequate?
I’ll answer for me. I think the penalties were adequate.
If the penalties were intended to forewarn coaches and staff members not to blatantly violate NCAA rules, they almost certainly will accomplish that.
The ‘show cause’ penalties assessed against head coach Jeremy Pruitt and a handful of coaches and staff members, all the way down to the recruiting coordinator should result in them possibly never coaching or participating in a major football program in their lifetimes. The penalties assessed against them were justified and should serve as a warning to other coaches who might be tempted to win by cheating.
Equally important was that none of the players were penalized for the transgressions of their coaches. Initially I thought that a bowl game prohibition should have been assessed, but that would have had the effect of penalizing the teen-age players who weren’t involved in the cheating and may not even be enrolled at UT when such prohibitions would be assessed.
So how do you feel about the Tennessee penalties?
