Too bad about Pat Fitzgerald. Not only doesn’t Northwestern not have a coach, but what candidates will be interested in coming to a weak program with players who apparently have denied responsibility for their disgusting behavior. The letter from the players—if they actually wrote it—denies responsibility.

Recruiting? Who’d send their son to play for a program without a coach and with teammates who conceivably could repeat their abuse of younger players?

It’s a shame. I always liked Fitzgerald. He seemed to be making Northwestern football what the college game should be all about. Northwestern is going to go from a team with modest success back to the doormat of the Big Ten. They have the fanciest training facilities in college football, but now the badly-needed rehab of decrepit Ryan Field may be in doubt, at least for a few more years.

Northwestern’s an Ivy League program in a conference where they’re way over their head competitively. After they get over this embarrassment, Northwestern fans may be looking at a decade or more of disappointment.
