Nieves scores early, Michigan up 1-0 (nm)

Selman knocks in his own rebound, scoring a short-handed goal, putting Michigan up 2-0

10:13 to play, Wisconsin scores second power play goal and the game is tied at two

Just over 4 minutes to play in first, Selman scores his second of the night, Michigan back in the lead 3-2

First period is over. Michigan 3, Wisconsin 2. Third Wisconsin power play was killed this time without giving up a goal. Teams will be full strength to start second.

Wisconsin scores on a delayed penalty, tying the game at 3. Now Badgers go on the power play

Wisconsin takes a 4-3 lead after the puck bounces off the end boards, then off two Wolverines, before ending up in the net. That's it for Nagelvoort. Michigan brings in Catt to take over in goal.

End of two, Wisconsin 5, Michigan 3. Pretty awful period there for Michigan. Did pretty much nothing right. Lots of turn overs, lazy play (it's never good when you get a pass intercepted behind your own goal), just a lot of bad play out of Michigan. Wisconsin hasn't won at Yost in 10 years, if Michigan doesn't get this turned around in the third, that little run may well be over.

Downing drops a hammer from the blue line and Michigan leads 6-5 with just over 9 minutes to play in regulation

Regulation is over with game tied at 6. 2 minute break, then 5 minute sudden victory overtime. Michigan will start with 1:11 of PP time

Game ends in a 6-6 tie. NCAA will treat this as a tie. There will be a shoot out to determine who gets the extra point in Big Ten standings. That puts Michigan behind Penn State in the standings who swept MSU this weekend.

Compher and Kile give Michigan goals in the shoot out to win it, giving Michigan the extra point in the Big Ten standings. That leaves them one point behind PSU. Yea, it's going to be one of those years.

What an awful weekend performance. Ten goals at home against this mediocre team. I can't believe that after 11 games, our defensive play and our discipline is so bad.

Yes, Racine is injured taking him out of the picture for the time being; he was injured last Saturday against Dartmouth and while they aren't being specific the way he acted on the ice the injury sure looked like a groin injury, not good for hockey players and especially not good for goalies. Defense continues to be a problem for the entire team and yes it is not great that your two best defenders (at least the ones who are supposed to be the two best) seem to be struggling with some basic stuff. They will probably go with Nagelvoort again next week against Minnesota assuming Racine is still out, but Catt at least showed he can come in an play (maybe they give him a shot with a start, Nagelvoort did nothing all weekend to lay claim to the starters position, although a lot of the goals he gave up, maybe all of them, could also be laid at the feet of the defense, at minimum they (the defense) did nothing to make it easier on him).

Michigan played two wretched periods of hockey this weekend, the first period Friday night and the second period Saturday night. A couple of the others weren't great. They obviously have a lot to work on. They got away with it this weekend (basically) because they were playing Wisconsin, who while improved from last year, is still a young team that has a ways to go. They won't get away with that next week and certainly not when they play PSU, a team that has made amazing strides for only being in their 3rd or 4th year as a varsity team.

After the opening weekend of Big Ten play, Michigan sits in third, one point behind both Penn State and Minnesota. Minnesota won two games over OSU, both wins coming in overtime, while PSU swept MSU; Friday night was closer, but Saturday was a butt whooping. You have to wonder how long the Anastos experiment will continue at MSU.
