Michigan held an intra-squad scrimmage Wednesday, but several sat out. Some guys have bumps and bruises, a player or two have been banged up a bit beyond that ... it made for an incomplete roster and a bit tough to tell just how good/bad guys were. Top two running backs Hassan Haskins and Blake Corum sat, as did tight ends Erick All and Luke Schoonmaker and several linemen and receivers. That might have been one of the reasons the defense played well, and some said better than the offense yesterday.

Both quarterbacks, redshirt frosh Cade McNamara and true freshman J.J. McCarthy, have had really good camps. On Wednesday, McNamara — probably aided by the better line (like he was in the spring game) — was the guy. He was good, while McCarthy struggled a bit.

Second-year frosh linebacker Nikhai Hill-Green continues to separate from veteran Michael Barrett. Barrett has missed some time here and there and needs to up his game. As noted yesterday, freshman Junior Colson has been slowed with injury, and that's given Kalel Mullings a chance to step up. He's responded with a really good camp, to date.

Veteran Donovan Jeter continues to play well on the defensive line. We've said it before — they've said it before — but it appears the light has gone on, and he could be an asset up front. We're still in 'show me' mode here, but he's admitted he is, too.

Finally, a name to watch we haven't mentioned yet — freshman safety Rod Moore. He had two picks in the scrimmage and has really come on. That position appears to be a strength for the years to come with young guys like R.J. Moten and Makari Paige emerging, as well.

We'll continue to provide more practice intel as we get it, including more scrimmage details.
