as coaches we teach all to control the contrallables and forget about what you cannot control. The officials have too much at stake to miss calls on purpose or to blatantly overturn a call because they want to. They have a job at stake and they get reviewed after every game. Is it better that replay has infiltrated sports? That's an arument for another time. Not for yesterday's game. Who controlled the following? Corum's dropped pass, procedure on a Haskins first down, defending MSU on a 4th and 4 up 16, Anthony making a superb diving catch or highballing a TD (who else on this team have we seen do that to date?) Letting a punt hit the ground and roll for 30 yards before halftime, going for a fake punt, protecting a 16 point lead late in the 3rd, missing Sainristal on a TD late, Johnson's drops, not being ready for a no huddle offense.
I am giving MSU credit for making more plays. The coaches job is to prepare an individual or a team day in and day out game after game. One of the greatest and successful collegiate baseball coaches ever said the following "there will be bad hops, there will be missed calls, there will be bad breaks so let's be ahead when that happens."
We preach that every year and we tell them they are never allowed to make an excuse, ever.
We once had a freshman football coach count a loss as a win because he said the officials were bad. UM is a top 15 team this year (way better than most expected) but a far cry from elite. Should we want to win and hate losing, you better believe it but good coaches try and make sure certain mistakes don't repeat themselves.
How good is this coaching staff? Probably good but also they have proved they are not elite.
You are only fooling yourself if you think UM should be competing for national titles. In the landscape of college football there is a select group that have the talent and coaching to win it all. Players win games and players win national championships. You never see a jockey carry a racehorse across the finish line. Our roster is not on par with others. We can hope for an 8 or 16 team playoff so we can get into the playoffs but winning one, well, the odds are not in our favor.
