If what many of us believe to be true, that a new coach is what is necessary, then this is still a top notch destination. If the biggest issue that you'll have to face as the new HC is changing/shaping the culture to your vision, well....that's kind of what a new coach is going to do anyway. And if you're given the ability to create your staff and run the football program (within the boundaries of what is acceptable here), then being the new HC at Michigan is a gem of an opportunity. If others are in the way or trying to dictate, then not so much. But here is what my sales pitch would be....
* Some of the best facilities, academics and resources
* This isn't some rebuild job where you are starting from scratch. You would be inheriting the second most talented roster in the Big Ten. Sure, some of the evaluations or ratings are going to be off (by either the rating agency or staff) - but they aren't wrong about everybody. This is still the second most talented roster in the conference.
* And it's a young team. On offense you have a young and stacked Offensive Line and RB room. TE's with a lot of potential. 2 four star QBs - Milton with amazing physical ability, and Cade with moxy and attitude - and coming in is five star JJ. You're most important position is looking pretty good with the right coaching and development. If you are a new HC and you have JJ coming in that can be your guy for the next 3-4 years - that's gotta be pretty appealing! Wide Receivers will need some recruiting attention, but the other rooms are pretty solid.
* On defense you'll have a five star at safety and on the DL. And that line will have a determined Hutchinson returning, and maybe even Paye. Mazi and Jeter are four stars. There's talent on the line, just not the attitude, scheme or strength. These are things that the right team can fix. You have the two best CBs in the 2022 class looking for a reason to commit. Give them that reason in 2021. Show them that you've got this team completely going in the right direction. There is already 7 four stars and 1 five star in your defensive backfield. Read that again and tell me that as a new HC you can't turn that into a good secondary. If you can't, then you shouldn't be coaching should ya?! There are 4 four star LBs on the team, with 2 more coming in this freshman class.
* With the right staff, chemistry and development this team can win 10 games next year. They can. As difficult as it is to see this weekend, that is a real possibility. The roster has four stars at every position. If you're a HC worth your salt then you firmly believe that you can create a coaching team to develop your players. A HC is going to look at this roster and believe he can turn them into a fantastic team right away.
* You'll have plenty of support from the alumni and those in the media. They just don't really like JH, for whatever reasons. Plenty of Michigan grads in the media that would want to see you succeed, and former players. Visibility and support are big features for someone looking at coming here.
* Look, if you're a HC and you are looking for the opportunity to take a program (that isn't named Alabama, O$U, L$U, or Clemson) and turn them into the next top tier program - there isn't really an opportunity out there like this. I'm completely biased but believe this is true. And if you have the ambition to be a HC in the NFL someday, this is a huge launching pad for the leap. You won't be wanting for visibility.
I'm trying to look at this as a new potential coach would. And it looks like a gangbuster of an opportunity to me. Am I wrong on any of this?
