Why has recruiting been so bad as far as star power?

Are all these really guys that Harbaugh just prefers and can mold to his system? How can Harbaugh/Michigan not attract big time recruiting classes? I know stars are not everything.

And why can't we find a premier back? Why is it easy for MSU to find guys like Leveon Bell and LJ Scott?

I don't think Bell or Scott could pass the entrance exam to get in at UofM

You can make an argument for Bell.....he turned into a stud......but was passed over by MANY MANY programs including Eastern Michigan. I think Scott is a strong back, but more of a product of his O Line, which face it Sparty has been able to put together nicely in the past.
IMO this season & next season (assuming Warriner is still onboard beyond this season) will be the defining years of Harbaugh & his ability with getting top notch RB's down the road
I know close doesn't count but word is M was damn close (2nd) to getting Najee Harris if some team named ALABAMA wasn't such a dominant powerhouse. Dude was TOP of the heap in RB's.
Success breeds success to these kids, so lets see if improvements to the running game the next 2 seasons can breed better success in the RB recruiting game.

You are right about Najee and we almost got Damian Harris who is the starter for bama now. We will get a stud if the oline gels, cause man the guys are talented and can hold thier own with anyone. Oline has the fundamentals all they need is someone to teach them.

I don't know about your Oline comment. Hope you're correct.....but until I see it.
I'd say life's biggest mystery in the last 10 years (other than how in the hell was Trump elected President ;-) ) is what the hell happened to Michigan's trademark strength in the Oline position.

I realize that when RichRod came in the schemes were totally different & the responsibilities were different for that group of Olinemen......so supposedly the transition to that & then back to another style when Hoke came in set things back.......but damn!! Oline production has been below average for too damn long.

Bell was a 2* with offers from only MSU, EMU, Bowling Green, and Marshall. The MSU staff saw him at a camp ( I think it may have been MSU's camp) and could tell he would be good. They told Bell not to go to any other camps. As a way to hide him knowing his rating would go up. It worked out. Same thing with Mark Ingram MSU was close to pulling this 2* in. Then Saban gets wind of him and steals him away. He goes on to win the Heisman at Bama.

Stars don't mean much to me, UM got Green and Walker both 5 star recruits and look what happened. I'll take a Tony Boles or Wheatly any day before any of these we talked about. GO BLUE ALWAYS

Wow. Bad example Mman. Wheatley & Boles were both stud backs in HS. They were huge gets by M back in the day. Don't get me wrong, I'd say Wheatley would be one of my favorite M players of all time (still have a #6 jersey) & I remember seeing Boles running wild in person back in '88 & '89.
To your point though, often star ratings mean squat.

Mark Ingram's Dad played for Saban at MSU. It was always gonna be bama if they could fit him into their class.
