trail....the reason I bring this up is UM needs to create some new areas.

1. Is Ohio a viable place for UM to recruit right now? Seems like Ohio is dead at least in the short term.

2. PA. I think this is one place UM could possibly get into although it's always been a challenge. Seems like a good state for the type of guys Harbaugh wants down the line.

3. CA. Possibly a couple of guys here and there because there are so many guys but a tough haul from out west.

4. Texas? Culture is different plus lots of competition. I personally think this is a state they should spend less time in going forward.

5. Illinois? I see it the Midwest (outside of Ohio) as where UM can get a 1/3 of their players. This includes the state of MI.

6. Florida....this is the future for UM.

7. Deep South...see CA.

8. Eastern Seaboard. See PA.

9. Fogetta about it. It's owned by OSU.

We are talking consistently.

I see

8 (MI, Ill, Ind,).
1 (Ohio)
2 (PA)
1 (CA)
4 (FL)
NJ/East (2)
3-5 (Rest (Tx, Wisc, Az, Georgia, etc.)

Got to give Harbaugh a lot of credit for recognizing Texas is just not the place. Bang your head up against the wall. See this last year for instance.

Thoughts?

California is a state Harbaugh could certainly exploit. While it is tough because of the distance involved, there are always a handful of top notch guys who actually do commit to programs east of the Mississippi.

Of the top so called recruiters who are head coaches in the East and South, Harbaugh I believe has spent the most time out West.

MI has several great players this year. Take care of your own backyard first.
I agree. Have to get the best players in MI that Harbaugh sees as high level enough but there just isn't the volume and in all honesty the quality on a year to year basis.

I do agree with others that over time...Harbaugh has to get some a couple of guys out of Ohio. Just a couple along with MI and Illinois and Indiana shouldgive UM about 10 guys or so and then the national recruiting will work out fine. Just can't become too dependent on recruiting outside the Midwest. Need a base just like Alabama needs a base coming from the deep south or USC/UCLA out of LA/So Cal or UT out of Texas.

My OP is really about UM being receptive to diversifying to areas that have talent (FL/CA) but still getting guys out of PA/MI and hopefully Ohio. Ohio is sort of like the electoral college...it's important to get something out of Ohio. In fact...I could make the comparison between the electoral college and recruiting for UM. They need Florida, Ohio and CA if they aren't going to get TX or the deep south. :_)

I would like to see the following:

.....Get some of the top kids out of Michigan
.....Get some of the top kids out of Ohio every year
.....Illinois has some very good recruits. Would like to see more kids from Chicagoland
.....Keep pulling kids from New Jersey, Florida, and CA.
.....Would like to see us get some of the very good players in Maryland
