I’m going to duck in advance and am not taking anything away from how bad yesterday was but at the same time it’s not clear we have better options to succeed than Harbs without taking a huge risk for the program. Does anyone remember exactly how much of a shit show the previous two coaching searches were before hiring Jim?
Anyway - in year 6 (full seasons not the partial that he took over in 2008) Dabo had 47 wins coming in (same as Jimmy through 5 full seasons) and really couldn’t get over the hump (at the time it was FSU for the most part). In that 6th year they got smoked in the opener by Georgia, lost again to FSU and dropped a late season game to Georgia Tech, 10-3 record. Despite a ton of NFL talent across the roster in previous seasons they were breaking in a first year starter at QB and not only couldn’t beat the elite teams on their schedule but continued to drop random games against inferior opponents. The rest is history with the run they went on starting in 2015.
I am well aware of the differences and advantages Clemson has over UM in today’s landscape and am not claiming we are on the cusp of going to the playoff every year for the next 5 years. What I am saying is that in one week we went from “the roster is loaded with young talent and speed everywhere, and we finally have a qb” to “we are depleted on the DL, OL and secondary and our head coach and staff all stink”. Talk about extremes.
I am in the same boat as many of you having seen the 80’s-90’s-00’s successes before living the last 20 years of life that has shown me more important things than a game. That being said I HATE what happened yesterday and can’t stand the state of the program with respect to osu abs bowl games. I do not claim to have the answers but just can’t see starting over at this point as a viable option before seeing how the rest of this season (and really next also) play out.
