A lot of this is going to sound pretty obvious without context but Michigan is fully aware of Jim Harbaugh’s desires to actively pursue NFL openings and has made those intentions clear to those who need to know his plans. Even without sources telling me this, the fact that his name has been linked, albeit in passing, in some coaching searches prove this to be true.
However, the Vikings search is the first time where there is something of substance. I cannot speak for the Vikings here but all of this is contingent on whether he receives an offer.
Some people believe an offer is not going to come, others believe it’s a possibility (though these are strictly opinion-based without substance).
Meanwhile, Harbaugh is telling recruits, players and families that he’s not going anywhere. Those in Schembechler Hall aren’t worried (yet).
So, where’s the disconnect coming from? That’s the million dollar question for all of this.
I think this is finally coming down to whether he receives an offer from the NFL. With something serious in hand, things have the possibility of turning on its head. Will that offer come? What happens when it doesn’t?
It’s going to be difficult to recruit for a program when you’ve been actively pursuing the NFL. That will hang over your head.
There’s some crossed wires somewhere. Perhaps someday, hopefully soon, we’ll get some answers. For now, I’ll continue to dig.
I still think he stays in Ann Arbor but the longer this drags on, the more awkward this season is going to be, in my opinion.
