Provided UM wins out, the only way they are going to get left out of the playoffs (unless something crazy happens) is if an undefeated Alabama team loses to UGA in the SEC championship game. UGA could jump UM and committee could keep Bama in the top 4.
Additionally, if Bama, Clemson, and ND all win out, UM would be the #4 seed and play Bama in the first round. IMO, Bama is *by far* the worst match-up for UM because of their defense. The best path to a National Championship is for UM to avoid playing Alabama. If Bama goes undefeated, we want ND or Clemson to lose one, so UM would play someone else in the first round.
If Bama loses to MSST or Auburn here are all the good things that could happen:
- Bama loses to UGA in the SEC championship and is eliminated from the playoffs
- Bama beats UGA and UGA is eliminated, but an undefeated Clemson team is the #1 seed. This could shake up the seeding enough for a UM/Clemson or even Clemson/Bama (best case) first round.
Obviously there is lots of football to be played and ND/Clemson could slip up, but Bama losing before the SEC Championship game pretty much locks up a spot for UM as long as we can stay healthy, take care of business, and finally slay the beast in C-Bus. Go Blue!
