Sperling was just appointed by the president to manage the covid—19 relief package that was just approved. Bringing it up for three reasons. First, he attended Ann Arbor Pioneer. Second, because he was a heck of a tennis player who kicked my a$$ in a junior tournament back in the day. He went on to captain the mens team at Minnesota. Third, I believe he wasn’t quite good enough to get a Michigan offer. Tennis scholarships are tight. In the 1978 signing class Michigan brought in highly regarded Mike Leach from, of all places, Minnesota. Things obviously turned out well for both Gene and Leach. Leach would go on to win the 1982 NCAA singles title for Michigan.
