Just doing a quick Rivals search on 2017--2019 UM vs MSU classes, here is what I came up with:
2017 Class:
=================
UM #4 Class Ranking
3 ~5 Stars, 16 ~4 Stars
Avg Star Ranking ~9
MSU #33 Class Ranking
0 ~5 Stars, 4 ~4 Stars
Avg Star Ranking ~33
2018 Class (Relative down year for UM recruiting) <--This is the year that is rearing its ugly head
========================================================================
UM #24 Class Ranking
0 ~5 Stars, 7 ~4 Stars
Avg Star Ranking ~19
MSU #26 Class Ranking
0 ~5 Stars, 4 ~4 Stars
Avg Star Ranking ~27
2019 Class:
==================
UM# 10 Class Ranking
2 ~5 Stars, 13 ~4 Stars
Avg Star Ranking ~6
MSU #33 Class Ranking
0 ~5 Stars, 4 ~4 Stars
Avg Star Ranking ~28
Totals:
=================
Average Class Ranking over three years:
UM #14
MSU #30.66
Count of 4 and 5 Stars
UM: 5 ~5 Stars, 35 4 Stars
MSU 0 ~5 Stars, 13 4 Stars
Average Star Ranking over three years (lower number is better here, ranked team order!)
UM: 11.33
MSU: 29.33
Based on Rivals alone, UM has way more talent on paper. Almost three times the amount of 4 stars over past three cycles. UM landed 5 5 stars, MSU landed zero. The most important factor is average star ranking, UM landing just outside the top ten at in star ranking over three year period, and MSU almost at 30.
Case in point, even with the terrible coaching that we saw on Saturday, we should have won on talent alone, based on past three cycles. The 2018 year was a pretty bad year though, not even a top 15 class which seems to rearing is ugly head in key areas!
The depressing factor, the gap between us and MSU is about the same as the gap between us and OSU!
