1. It will be interesting to look back at the SMU game in a few months and better understand whether the play calling was based more on trying to give them game reps running the ball regardless of the situation or strict adherence to an offensive philosophy/identity. I'm of the opinion that we'll see a more diverse/balanced scheme as we enter B1G play. We were clearly pounding a square peg in a round hole intentionally in the first half. We went tight formations and ran the ball between the tackles even though SMU had 8 in the box and run blitzed. It wasn't until the second half that we opened up a bit and clearly took advantage of them through the air. I doubt we see that (for such long stretches in a game) going forward unless we have a game well in hand.
2. As we were clearly emphasizing the running game in the first half without much success, I was really surprised we didn't see some of the other OL sprinkled in. To me, it seemed like the perfect time to give Hudson and Mayfield a series or two with the 1's. Since they didn't see any action, that leads me to believe the reality of them actually working their way into the starting line-up is a ways off...not as soon as I thought might be the case. It just seems really odd that we didn't use that situation to see what they injected into run game.
