Two Things Annoying Me Today: "Offer" Analysis and OSU Hype . . .

First of all, we just hired a coach who is widely considered one of the very best coaches in football. He turned a miserable Stanford program into the #4 team in the country before he left, and he had them playing a brand of football so physical they walked into the Coliseum and trounced USC and Pete Carroll 55-21.

So why are people so "concerned" about how many offers we are handing out? Let the guy do his job. He's smarter than you. Guaranteed. He has a plan.

And let's assume for the sake of argument Harbaugh is just as successful here in a few years as he has been everywhere else. Right now, we are laying groundwork in other states, and building connections with top programs. When we are winning big in 3-4 years - or even sooner - the foundation will already be in place in these states (like, for example, New Jersey and Florida), and when the wins come, the very top kids in these states will be very interested. You get your name out there now, and build relationships, you don't wait until after you've achieved success and then try to do it.

Second, *UCK Urban Meyer. No, really. He wins one national championship and it's as if half our fans are in awe of him. He won a national title at Florida, too. Then the very next year, an underachieving Michigan team beat him in the Citrus Bowl. And then he won another title; and then Nick Saban built a better program, so Urban left the SEC.

Let's stop with all this nonsense. First, they are not going to repeat. You know why? Because no one does it. Not Miami. Not USC. Not Florida. Not Alabama. Not FSU. Why? Because it's too hard. All of these aforementioned teams were so-called "dynasties," and yet none repeated. Urban is a great coach. He's getting very good players. Yet I have no doubt that as PSU improves, MSU continues to be very good, and Michigan gets back on track, all of these teams will pose strong challenges to OSU each year, and several of them will beat OSU from time-to-time.

As far as us, despite our other clear shortcomings, even under Hoke we played three very close games against OSU during the past three years. If Harbaugh can smack Pete Carroll around - which he did - he can do the same to Urban. I'm not predicting the demise of Urban or OSU by any means - he's a great coach and he has things rolling there. But if, in the next 10 years, our record against OSU isn't at least 5-5 (assuming Harbaugh is here the whole time), I'll be surprised.

I mean, as a Michigan fan, if you can't have confidence in Jim Harbaugh, is there anyone you can feel good about?
