I've been checking out PlayStation Vue. I noticed a channel in the guide called Esportstv. Being unfamiliar with it, and hoping that it was a new, promising sports channel, I clicked on it. At first I thought that I'd landed in the midst of a video game commercial. But no. The channel seems to be nothing more or less than live television coverage of kids playing video games, apparently as part of some sort of tournament or league. (My old guy reaction: Is this how kids waste time when they get tired of wasting time by playing video games?)
Because this channel exists, a market obviously exists for people who want to watch other people play video games. However, until yesterday, I had been blissfully unaware that such a thing was even conceivable. Heck, I'm only vaguely aware that video games exist beyond Pong and Pacman.
Is anyone here into this video-game voyeurism? Can anyone explain its appeal? (Full disclosure: I may simply be inextricably disconnected by age from current cultural trends. Thus, any efforts to explain all this may well fail.)
