thus far, I’d use the word inconsistent. Every conference win is a good win so let’s start there. For the most part, our free throw shooting and defensive effort is excellent. The bench was also good today in spite of the fact that Hunter was pressed into a starting role. He’ll be hard to get out of there now. But there are still issues.
The most prominent one is the turnovers. And it wasn’t just tonight, it’s been a theme all season. Brooks and John’s are turning it over way too often per touch. If Brooks is going to be at the point, he is going to need to be better. Wagner and Livers are guilty too.
Second it’s not been a great shooting team. If you take out Dickinsons and Browns FG percentage, this team would be nowhere. Smith is a scorer, but not a great shooter. Brooks is very streaky and needs to finish better in the lane. Wagner’s outside shooting...the only word I can think of is poor. And Livers is the definition of inconsistent.
The good news is that while the team is building chemistry and finding their identity, they are 5-0. There are a lot of inconsistent teams in college basketball but few of any of them are undefeated. You can see Juwans influence on both ends of the floor. It also seems Juwans is learning to be a better game coach. If this team can cut down turnovers and shoot it a little better, no team in the country is going to want to face them. I like where we are headed.
