1) lack of depth due to average recruiting recently. That is on the coaches but also on our weak fan base and athletic departments overall lack of support for basketball compared to schools that take basketball seriously.
2) lack of development of recent recruiting misses or misjudgments of some thought to be decent recruits, both on coaches. Wilson, Donnal, Doyle, in particular. Others, not so much.
3) a healthy Spike and Caris. If the two problems above were much less, problems on the coaches, the loss of these two would be less ifs problem. Team has no legs because of the lack of depth, partly Beileins fault, partly due to these injuries.
Beilein and staff are fantastic at developing players skill sets but have too many misses on this roster/slow to stagnant development.
Beilein and his staff are excellent coaches. Period. Short and long term trends prove this. Weaknesses exposed this year for various reasons don't change that.
Michigan may or may not recover from this game and may or may not get on a better track when/if Levert returns.
Beyond Beilein, who I love as a coach, who deserves time to figure this out, and is a great coach; for the basketball PROGRAM to be a power, not a great story for a few years here and there because of the fab five and Beileins phenomenal 5+ year run now, UM a needs certain things.
A monster name coach,, and/or a monster magnetic personality in order to be like Florida, Oklahoma, Ohio State to a lesser degree, and a few other "football" schools that are consistently as powerful in basketball.
If the fan base doesn't demand this and the a department doesn't push in this direction, we will continue to be relevant here and there rather than consistently powerful.
