- first, got to take spring games with a grain of salt - especially when it comes to offensive execution. No game planning, mixing up lines, unusual substitutions, lots of backups playing. I have seen lots of poor spring offensive performances on offenses that turned out to be good the following fall.
- Morris looks raw (despite this being his 2nd year) but still too early to write him off. He's only been coached by this staff for what, a month? He's got the physical tools - great arm, decent size, and good wheels. He had a few balls dropped. Some of the balls he had to "rifle" in was because he was throwing into tight coverage. Yes, he missed some throws . . . but at least he seemed to be finding the open receivers on those plays. Accuracy, touch and timing are things that can be improved on. He looks like a guy who at least has the ability to develop.
- I just question whether Malzone has the physical tools to win at a high level. Below average size and arm strength. Not sure he looked like a high major pro style QB.
- I don't wish an injury on Speight but I hope that's the reason he didn't play - otherwise, I'm guessing he moves on before the fall.
- its really hard to assess the offensive line in a game like this. You're splitting up the lines so chemistry is an issue. Vanilla game plan. A defense that knows your plays. Hard to expect much out of the running game.
- Our receivers physically look the part. But way too many drops. Canteen had a nice fingertip catch near the end of the game. But development of good hands sometimes comes with experience, increased confidence, focus, etc. See Braylon Edwards. See even Jeremy Gallon. I think our starters will end up being Darborh, Canteen and Chesson.
- I don't see it from Derrick Green. While he looks to have gotten himself into good shape, he just doesn't seem to have good explosion, wiggle or even tackle breaking ability. Just not a natural runner IMO.
- None of our backs really have a lot of wiggle. I kind of like the patience Shallman shows to find a whole but he doesn't really have necessary quickness or wiggle. Smith looked like the best option today. Hopefully Drake Johnson comes back quickly. It wouldn't surprise me if a freshman is competing for the starting spot in the fall.
- Our D is going to be very good this year. Great depth on the defensive line with lots of guys who can make plays. And remember, Mario O. didn't play today, Charlton didn't play today and I think a guy who is going to be very good is Matt Godin when he comes back in the fall. You want to know a big reason why Bolden looked so good today . . . the d line protected him very well. Hurst looks like player. R. Glasgow is very good. Mone is a wall. Wormley was kind of quiet today. Marshall looks like a potential playmaker on the edge. OSU leaned on their d line last year . . . and we should be able to do the same.
- For the first time in a long time, it looks like we have some very good safeties. Wilson, Hill, Thomas, Peppers. Lots of playmakers in the secondary. And although we don't have great corner depth, I like Countess, Lewis and Stribling.
- I think we're looking at a defense that could be top 10 nationally this year.
