I know this might not be well received by the doubters, but... I think Shea played a good game on Saturday. First, though, the obvious. Yes, he short-armed a few passes. The two or three to DPJ and the low throw to Gentry. If he hits any of those those in stride, drives continue with the chance to put up half a hundred against OSU. Good enough to win 99 times out of a century.
That being said, his two TDs to Nico Collins were incredible throws, NFL level. Credit to Shea for putting them where only Nico could get it, and to Nico for making more than his share of amazing grabs. He’s a special talent at WR that we haven’t seen since Avant and Braylon.
Back to Shea though. He would have had a third great TD pass if not for Gentry’s terrible drop in the end zone. That was one of the worst drops I have ever seen from a U-M player, period. Again, it was a high level throw that we haven’t seen from a Michigan QB in more than a decade.
To be fair, on some of his throws Shea didn’t step into, or just had “happy feet.” Unfortunately, that’s what happens when you get pressure. And that resulted in his lone interception on the day, as well as the play in which he was injured. Better play up front and a couple of drops that end up as catches, and Shea probably throws for 300 yards and runs for another 50. Would that have been enough? Hard to play th what if game, but U-M would have been in it til the end.
Assuming he’s back next year, I have no doubt Patterson can put up an All-American and potentially Heisman level season. We are lucky to have him.
