I do agree there is some attrition to happen with the big men (likely Donnal) - will likely happen when the term comes to an end. I also think Austin Hatch has told our staff he will take a medical if there is anyway to help the program - it's like offering money to someone for dinner - you don't want to take it - you insist, no no you're part of this team etc etc, but eventually they keep insisting and you give in - I think the staff will insist he remain on scholarship, but he will convince them otherwise. Kid is amazing and this is just another level of who he is as a young man. He knows he cannot contribute on the court, but can help off the court, and will be playing basketball every day of his life in the Michigan colors as part of the program/on the bench. I would not be shocked if he gets an exemption for Senior Day in a few years.
So if Donnal is gone and Hatch is off regular scholarship, you have two open (assuming Caris is back)
I think you sign the VA guard who left VCU and you bring back Mad Max for a year on schollie
You then have -
5's - Doyle, Wilson, Max
Wings - Irvin, Dawkins, Chatman, Wagner, Robinson
Guards - Walton, Spike, Rahk, VCU kid
You RS the VCU kid
Your 2016 class is then the VCU kid, Teske, Austin Davis - with Max, Spike and Levert leaving the program
2 bigs and and a combo guard is your 2016 class - we have plenty of wings
If the VCU kid is ok with the RS, you then have a 2016 kid a year into the program and 4 years to play
Also think our staff likes Rahk as the backup PG with some PG ability by the VCU kid
I also do think Wagner and Wilson will play the 4 in 2016 - to get two BIGS on the floor with the 4 having the shooting ability - my thoughts have been, as long as you can shoot as well as GR3 did when we played in the National Champ, we can win with you at the 4 in terms of having a good shooting team - I think he shot around 30-32 percent
I also don't think Austin Davis will RS - if he has the size, he could benefit from 5-10 minutes in a mini-Doyle role - remember he still has another year to develop
2016 lineup
5 - Doyle, Teske, Davis
4 - Chatman, Wagner, Wilson
3- Dawkins, Robinson
2- Irvin, VCU kid
1- Walton, Rahk
You then only have Walton and Irvin leaving the program for 2017 - you grab two elite kids
Someone mentioned the Wisconsin model last night - and I think that was the model all along, but kids have blown up making the final four run - I think things have been reset since - Levert and Spike will play four years, same for Walton and Irvin
