5th Year Seniors
3* 5.6 Noah Furbush
3* 5.7 Lawrence Marshall
3* 5.7 JBB
3* 5.6 Jared Wangler
4* 5.8 Chase Winovich
3* 5.7 Bryan Mone
3* 5.6 Brandon Watson
The class of 2014 was small (16 signees) and ranked low (31st). Nearly half the class transferred (7 players), but 4 of those were grad transfers (Speights, Ways, Bunting, Harris) and actually contributed when they were at Michigan.
Two players graduated and were studs: Peppers and Cole.
Of the seven remaining players (those who stayed):
-One superstar (Winovich) who went through a lot to attain that status
-Two having phenomenal years (Watson & JBB) who were afterthoughts most of their careers
-Two solid contributors (Mone & Marshall) who had their share of downs over the years
-One really can't crack a loaded depth chart at his position (Furbush) who already graduated with a degree in aerospace engineering
-One has switched positions and earned a little playing time and touchdown (Wangler)
That's some awesome production from your fifth year seniors who really weren't very highly regarded, did not have the easiest time for most of their careers, who could have left for greener pastures, who nevertheless persevered and have been justly rewarded. They could go down as leaders of one of Michigan's all time great teams. Special stuff for those guys.
ADDENDUM:
The 2015 class of Seniors and RS Juniors tells a similar story:
4* 5.9 Zach Gentry
4* 5.8 Tyree Kinnel
3* 5.7 Reuben Jones
3* 5.7 Karan Higdon
3* 5.6 Jon Runyan Jr.
3* 5.6 Grant Perry
2* 5.3 Nolan Ulizio
The 2015 class was even smaller (14 signees) and ranked even lower (49th). Half the class transferred (6) or suffered career ending injury (Newsome). Of the remaining players:
- 5 starters/significant contributors (Gentry, Kinnel, Higdon, Runyan, Perry)
- 2 players who have been surpassed by younger players (Ulizio, Jones)
- 2 captains
-1 sure fire All Big 10 player (Higdon) moving up M's record books every game
-Multiple players with a legit shot at All Big 10 (Gentry, Kinnel, Runyan)
-2 players who will likely be back (Runyan & Gentry) and could be really good as 5th year seniors
I mean, that's a pretty good hit rate for a 14-player class rated 49th that saw its highest rated player (Cole, who didn't even crack the top 100 at 101) leave, arguably its most talented player (Newsome) suffer a career ending injury, and its second highest-rated player (Gentry) switch positions.
