but moreso I was football raised by Bo. Bo was a man of his word. Love him or hate him, you knew where he stood. You knew him. I’ve been thinking about all of this coaching drama lately and then today something not at all to do with Michigan struck me, and I thought of Bo.
When Texas fired Herman today, they immediately named Sarkisian as the new heir to their throne. Sarkisian is coaching on a team that is playing for a national championship. Now this may shock you youngsters, but when I was football raised by Bo, and many other coaches I considered heroes of their time, it was simply not done to take a job while still coaching for another team. Moreover, it simply was not done to TALK to another coach while he was still coaching. Bill Frieder can tell you firsthand how Bo felt about that.
And I’m sure a whole lot of you will disagree with me and Bo, but Bo was correct. Those things shouldn’t be going on during a season. Sure most coaches have agents but for Alabama’s OC to be named head coach today, he certainly was deeply involved in the process.
So in further thinking about Coach Harbaugh, and Warde Manuel, it may seem completely strange and odd and wrong and foolish to wait til season’s end and wait for other coaches to be done coaching elsewhere to finalize and announce things, but what if they still really do adhere to what their old coach, mentor, and friend drilled into them? Don’t do anything to hurt another program except beat them on the field, Bo would say. You don’t go talk to a guy (I can hear his gruff voice I loved so much) who is still actively doing a job for someone else, certainly not to the point of hiring him and making it public.
And in regard to so so many people who are now “sure” he was shunned by NFL offers, that he has rejected at least two extension offers from Warde, that he is playing Michigan like a fiddle: I respectfully say that I don’t think you know any of these things as fact. So what if, whether you or I or anyone else agrees with their methods, it was done with their honor code in place and nothing more sinister or devious or heavy handed was done? Cuz I think that’s possible.
I would not have cried (much) if they had fired Jim. I am perplexed as to his persona in general these past couple years at least, and I will be waiting anxiously to see signs of new life. Also interested in the details of the extension. But one thing is clear with myself: I’m in. I’m in because I’m Wolverine Kim and Michigan is part of my heart. And as it appears we have our coach, I’m gonna wish him — and all of us — a happy new year. Go Blue!
