This should be fun. I think the jury is still out on...

Don Brown. What do you think of his schemes? I like a defense that blitzes about 50% of the passing downs. It's a coin flip for the offense to figure out what is coming.

Now I haven't seen all his alignments but my overall impression that it is a little too aggressive. I guess it depends on the opponent but a team with a good scat back or good qb play is probably going to get some big gains here and there.

From what I see from the Brown system is that it is highly dependent on quick lb'ers and safeties. Is this going to work against power running teams? Seems more suited for spread teams or a Pac-12 type conference where you see Oregon.

Being successful at BC isn't quite the same as going up against Wiscy and MSU and Iowa.

Brown has an embarrassment of riches this year at UM. Lots of sacks but opponents may start figuring out his schemes after they see it a couple of times.

Frost (I know he is despised) referenced that you can take advantage of the schemes if you have the right personnel. Is he referring to a back who can catch or a bunch of quick wr's?. Sounds to me like he is talking about Oregon or Clemson.

I am a little worried that his teams may be a little undersized for the BT after this year. Better have some tough sob's up front and lb'ers who can hit. Peppers reminds me of the guy who Brown wants but can a guy like that sustain the rigors of week in and week out physical offenses?

Thoughts?

It's fruitless to comment at this point. While for a minute on Saturday I thought the same thoughts as you, I quickly came to my senses & realized that due to the competition level M was playing the defense is not going to show the "real McCoy" stuff they will be running. Sure, there may be some bits & pieces shown but doubt immensely you can use the same keys that M showed week 1 & 2.

Jury is still out due to the competition but I'm sure they aren't showing their entire defense. I do like the speed of the entire team. As for blitzing, it all depends on the d-line. If they pressure the qb, you don't need to blitz.

RM, if you're worried about Brown's schemes not doing anything I believe Boston went up against Florida State and Clemson. Not sure how the schemes did though. Does anyone else know?

He'll be fine. They're playing very vanilla D right now. Not only are we using a small portion of the packages, I don't even recall seeing any zone yet this year (which is part of his D).

It looks to me as if they're using these first few games to teach some fundamentals more than anything else. The better we can get at the man-to-man pressure (and holding our lanes), the better overall we'll be.

That is my impression...that his defense is set up to deal with passing teams to get to the qb rather than set up to defend power run teams.

Let's be honest here. The ACC is constructed a lot different than the BT. At the end of the day...I don't think getting more speed is a bad thing (McCray/Peppers) and safeties that can run but not at the expense of guys who can take and fight off blocks from guys who are thumpers.

Peppers is probably one of a handful of guys who can be physical with that kind of speed. I need to see McCray play against Iowa/Wiscy/MSU.

I just think this year UM has the DLine to make things easier for the lb'ers to go downhill but that may not be the case next year. I may very well be wrong. I think Bush is going to be a great test case for UM...he is fast enough but is he rugged enough to last a BT season?
