In 1986, when I moved into East Quad, the sophomores were very excited because all the rooms had been fitted with phones that all had direct dial numbers, replacing really ancient rotary phones that went through the front desk. The other big deal was each dorm resident got a code for long-distance purposes so you didn't have the hassle of splitting the long distance bill (yes, kids, that used to be a real thing).
Also, each room had this mysterious data port. Nobody really knew what it was for but apparently you could connect your computer to something called a "network."
Sometime after that, each room was wired for cable tv.
But no more. The wired data connections remain, but effective last Monday, the phones were removed from the rooms because nobody was using them. Also, because kids are using their phones and laptops for video/TV, last Monday was also the last day for in-room cable tv service.
