Is this oline. 2.5 recruiting classes in and we're incredibly patchwork. We have a revolving door at RT both figuratively and literally. Depth? Name our LT tomorrow if Cole goes down in practice. I can't. He'll, is Cole himself even a left tackle?
Next year? More of the same. We'll be doing it all over again with three new starters. One of the new starters projects to be a potentially significant upgrade (although the 5th year senior he'll be replacing was a rivals100 recruit). We'll likely be starting two new tackles- neither of which are coming from this years two deep. Neither will be upperclassmen. More likely, we'll be starting two redshirt freshmen.
It's just hard to reconcile the pace of this rebuild. If it's not year three, and anecdotally, doesn't look like it will be year four, is year five the year? Year five will see five returning starters with two fourth year and three third year players. At that point we might actually have functional depth where in year six we'll be turning over starters and replacing them with then upperclassmen.
So year five is when we start 'reload' instead of 'rebuild'. Just didn't think it would take this long. Why? Look at Stanford under JH.
And thus brings me to my actual point. Where is that lunchpail nasty streak OL that beat USC in the colosseum by 34 despite being 11 point dogs?
I've been admittedly obsessed with Stanford style manball for years. Call it therapy in response to the rotten fish taste from the RR spread years here at UM. I read 'Rags to Roses' and tried to reconcile how JH turned a bunch of 2* garbage on the OL into a unit that feared no one and imposed their will on entirely NFL laden front fours at USC. How has his apprentice picked up the torch and continued a culture there of fearlessness in the running game (https://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2017/10/17/16485234/bryce-love-stanford-football-2017)?
Hit that link and look at their guys and then look at our guys. They're sculpted and agile and executing. Just a completely different product physically that found their roots in what the original dons, JH and drevno, brought there years ago.
Why can't they bring it here? Where is the fire? After drevno, it was Greg roman and more of that fire. Roman is and was known as a firey lunchpail sort of guy. Is he the missing piece? He's TE coach for the ravens right now after a lackluster three year stint as the Bills OC. Maybe he's not the answer either. But then who is?
I've seen numerous comments in numerous threads about JHs sideline demeanor and his demeanor in pressers. Where is his fire? It felt like his Stanford OLs were an extension of him. They fed off his drive and hunger. Winning was almost secondary to just beating the piss out of the guy in front of you each and every play. I guess I just feel like the real JH formula was to always dominate the other team up front, and the rest would fall into place. Just not seeing that philosophy here. Really wish we were.
