the limits and restrictions on spring practice
You're allowed 15 practices during a five-week period. Per NCAA rules, eight of those practices can feature live contact and three of them can include live contact for more than 50 percent of the workout -- basically, you can have three scrimmages.
The spring game counts as a practice, so it'll be your 15th and final workout. Michigan starts on Feb. 24 and wraps on April 4 with the spring game. You get up to four countable hours a day during those practice days.
You're only allowed to have two live contact periods in the same week, and can't go back-to-back with live workouts.
In terms of the actual spring game, I'm not sure yet. Harbaugh used to treat his spring games as real games when he was at Stanford. Complete with player drafts.
The coaching staff would be split into two teams, and they'd go through a draft with the entire roster. They usually made a pretty big deal about it. Did the draft in the team meeting room, made a big deal of the guys who were picked early (sort of a reward for the players who performed the best).
And, in most cases with Harbaugh, the winning team is rewarded with a steak dinner that night.
The losers have to eat hot dogs.
