I get it, we're angry. We have a right to be angry. We endured seven years of The Dark Times and wanted to see light at the end of the tunnel ASAP.
Tonight we saw that while the light is there, it's still a good distance away.
And to be clear, the light IS still there. I've seen people compare Harbaugh to Rich Rod and Hoke tonight. Ludicrous. They'd have lost tonight's game by three scores minimum instead of four points, even without five turnovers.
Tonight was bad. The youth of this team and the lack of numbers from Harbaugh's very first class in 2015 showed itself tonight. We don't have a lineup of talent-laden juniors on the offense like Harbaugh should have in Year 3. He's got half of 16 guys left from that first class and all of them are playing except Grant Newsome. Imagine the line if he were healthy and on the right side instead of Ulizio or JBB. Imagine if that 2015 class was 25 instead of 16 and it included Mike Weber who was originally committed, and other talented offensive players that would be juniors this year. This is why using Year 3 logic with Harbaugh is just not right. He's still a year behind with his own recruits, whether you want to believe that or not.
There are plenty of reasons to be mad about tonight's game, but jumping off the ledge over this game, even it being a loss to Sparty and Dantonio, is just not a good look. There's no easy button for this. It isn't Harbaugh's fault or Drevno's fault, or Frey's fault, or O'Korn's fault or the O-Line's fault or anyone's singular or group fault. It's a collective pool of blame that goes back to the circumstances of how this team has been constructed. One thing we know for certain at this point: There is work to do and a lot of it on the offensive side. The coaches and players are stinging about this loss more than anyone on this board is, believe that. It's their job to right the ship. We will find out soon whether they will or not.
I agree with Karsch when he says you don't change a prediction, so my standing 10-2 will remain and I couldn't care less how crazy any of you think that sounds after tonight. For that matter, I'm pretty sure the Fort is a place to be avoided for at least the next week due to the extreme hyperbole so many are tossing out here. Kudos to those of you who aren't on the ledge ready to jump after tonight. There's still a minimum of seven games left to play and the race is far from over, no matter what anyone says. Time to see how this team deals with true adversity now and believe me, judging from the loss itself and the resulting biblical reaction from this fanbase and everyone else in the country, it is true adversity indeed in a football sense.
GO BLUE.
