Ok, I was finally able to complete the great sandwich debate aka Sandwichpalooza of our time. My coworker and I (both Marine veterans) got out of work yesterday and drove down to Ann Arbor to get comparable sandwiches from each establishment, then do a bite for bite comparative analysis.
What a great way to celebrate the 245th birthday of our beloved Corps, by eating salted and brined meats!
We stopped at M&B first. Very cool seeing all the signatures on the wall, the pictures of Beilein and such on there too. We ordered the Triple Play Reuben (#44) on their menu. Also had a half sliced pickle included. Staff wasn’t rude or friendly. Mostly indifferent. We waited to eat until we got the sandwich from Zingerman’s as well.
Went to Zingerman’s next. The ambiance and artistic value of Zingerman’s was really cool. So much to look at and admire there. The staff was amazingly friendly and courteous. Got the Binny’s Brooklyn Reuben (#48) on their menu. It also came with a pickle.
We sat down outside of Zingerman’s and dug in. Bread surface area was actually slightly bigger at Zingerman’s. This surprised me, as I had heard M&B makes a much larger sandwich. But then I took a bite out of M&B and wow, was that thing densely packed with meat after all! Significantly more meat than was on Zingerman’s sandwich. Though I did feel like the sandwich from M&B was a little dry. I actually liked the pickle from M&B much better than the pickle from Zingerman’s.
Zingerman’s sandwich, while $5 more expensive than M&B to go along with having less meat than the M&B, tasted better IMO. Had adequate amount of sauce, bread tasted a little better, meat was every bit as tasty as M&B. I LOVED both, but based off solely what I experienced yesterday, I thought Zingerman’s tasted better.
So overall breakdown.
Tastier sandwich: Zingerman’s (though if M&B had more sauce on their sandwich, it would probably be a toss up).
Tastier pickle: M&B
Better bang for your buck: M&B, big time.
Friendlier staff: Zingerman’s.
Better ambiance: Zingerman’s.
If I am on death row and I can only have one sandwich, I’m requesting Zingerman’s. If I live in Ann Arbor on the budget I have currently, I’m always going to go to M&B.
Just one guys opinion.
And Happy Veteran’s Day everyone. I just gave a speech to a Veterans memorial with assembled guests and camera crews in Saginaw. Speech touched on the brotherhood formed by people in battle. God bless my brothers and sisters in arms out there!
