Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State
In seven years of the college football playoffs (CFP):
1. Every year of the CFP there have been at least TWO of these teams in the Final Four, EVERY YEAR
2. Every single College Football Championship game included at least ONE of these teams
3. In four of the seven years, the championship game included TWO of these teams.
4. In only ONE year out of seven was the Champion NOT one of these three teams (LSU 2020)
Observation: I don't think this is healthy for college football.
I do not believe in "fairness".
Meaning, I'm not one of those guys who thinks every kid should get a trophy. I think that is BS and creates an entitlement mentality.
I believe in striving, achieving, fighting, working hard, winning and losing. I think it is an ethos that makes us all better. Yet we have a problem here.
Barriers to Entry: YET, Somehow, if 135 division I college football programs cannot break the absolute LOCK these three programs have upon the National Championship, I think there may be a "structural problem".
The Rich Get Richer: Everyone (except the other 132 programs) are motivated to perpetuate this monopoly
Recruits: "If you want to be on the big stage, play for national championships go to Alabama, Clemson, or Ohio State"
Conferences: The Big Ten Conference bends over backward, changes their own rules to get OSU into the playoff
Networks: The networks do not want undefeated Cincinnati in the playoffs, who would watch that game? The networks WANT ratings, enter ratings friendly sacrificial lamb Notre Dame
Ground Hog Day
Is anyone here excited to watch Ohio State Alabama game next week?
How about watching it again next year? and every year...forever?
If this is not changed, fan interest will suffer. Fan interest in the College Football Playoffs will suffer. This is not healthy for the sport.
The College Football Playoff has a Problem
What are potential solutions?
