The coaches did choke it and yes...the re-setting of the wr's and line was a dumb call. Should have rolled out and passed or ran and then used the TO if clock is still running. Pass on 2nd down and probably if stopped could have spiked and then kicked.
That being said...it was dumb to go for it on 2nd down. That was dumb coaching. Here is why. Yes you are going for the win but you are also going for the loss. It's tough to score down inside the 5 yard line whether you are throwing or running. Lot's of defenders. You only need a 1/2 yard but going up against a stout defensive line. See the play before.
A good coach would have stepped back and said there is significant risk by going for it whereas a fg ties it up and Minny has the advantage against a backup UM qb and at home.
Here is the difference. If UM was scoring with a very good qb/run game and Minny couldn't stop UM...by all means go for the win but anybody watching that game could tell you that Minny could stop UM on offense and could score on UM on offense.
The better team was Minny last night with or without Speight. The Minny coach lost perspective. This is what separates a lot of coaches. He panicked. Was it the worst call ever?...now. But it was a rash call and as someone said before...his end of the 1st half call was poor.
There was a UM poster criticizing Harbaugh for going for the 4th down at the end of the 1st half. That was a smart call. Look at each decision within a context of probabilities and I think you can tell the good coaches from the not so good coaches.
Want to see an example of a good coach. See Durkin. He knew Minny liked to run that play and he knew they were within the sneak range so he played the percentages. See how this works. UM played the percentages and Minny went against the percentages.
