Tarun, per a thread on Jimmy's longevity a while back

I kinda agree with detroitjohn - Jimmy has a VERY long leash here in Ann Arbor. We all know that he is a fantastic coach but he's also completely nuts and I think he can rub folks the wrong way - college is perfect for him because kids know they have to put up with him for 4 years only. Furthermore, he is adorned in AA and he is in control - that situation does not really exist in pro football unless you are Bill Belichik. Even John Harbaugh will start to be questioned this year if his team goes 8-8...that's just the nature of the NFL - you are so dependant on an owner and GM being able to fork out money and have the right mentality versus in college where you have a greater span of influence if you are a coach like Harbaugh.

I also agree that cirumstances change, things change - family situations come up so you never really know but I think he is at peace and I think he will likely be around for another 5+ years at least. Biggest risk with him is his staff - he hires really well and as he succeeds there will be turnover over there at a higher rate then most schools since most of his guys have NFL pedigree but I am sure he can manage that well.

It's funny to see Harbaugh actually have his own "coaching tree" (or just a sapling at this point). I heard David Shaw on an interview discussing his mentors and he mentioned Harbaugh a few times during.

Totally agree about the black swan issue, there are certainly unanticipated issues like scandals, health crisis, etc. that could change things. I am thinking the same way you are, he's well fitted for the college game where his yahoo personality wears well for 4 to 5 years for undergrads, not for 30 year old plus seasoned pros.

All things being equal, if he keeps clean and wins, I think he's here for a long, long time. He's not likely to retire at 63 and, dammit, this is his dream job! I'm going to relish having a coach of his caliber for as long as I can.

Carr's lack of a coaching tree is what necessitated the RichRod experiment. Harbaugh already has a several assistants who are head coaches.

I would take Harbaugh for a total of 5 years and be happy. He will have the program on very solid footing. Of course...I prefer longer.

Well, Carr was a pretty solid coach - I actually liked him as coach - but his style was nothing inspiring or innovative. There really isn't a lot to build on there, but I'm happy he still has an office on campus.

Carr was good for what Michigan needed at the time - Gary M would have been great actually - dude could coach, he just could not control his alcohol. Carr got results because Michigan generally had superior talent - he was by no means and X's and O's genius and he was almost too loyal to the Michigan tree. Kirk Ferentz is of the same Carr mold and it was not until last year when Kirk went with a spread option that he started to see some major success. Carr was a class-act and agree, glad he still has a spot with the program.

Indeed, was SO disappointed Moeller f'ed up. I really thought he was going to put us on the National map with his aggressive style. Much more so than Carr. Definitely one of those what if moments in "M" football lore if he could have kept his sh*t together.

Yep - I just remember us scoring like 50+ points every game back in the 90s!!! Only if.

Problem with Moeller is that he would wear his teams out in practice. They would come in flat on some game days.

Should've been 4-1 vs msu! One of if not the worst "no call" by a ref I've ever seen!!!
True that, I was sitting on the westside 25 yard line, had a perfect view of the mugging Brown gave Howard. I give Moeller credit for going for it instead of settling for a tie. Probably the reason why he settled for a couple ties a couple years later vs. Illinois and Ohio State.

I watched the sparty version of Michigan replay that Sunday to see what ol perles had to say! When they showed the play the camera zoomed WAYYYY out so you couldn't see the tackle on Howard when the ball was in the air!!!
