I believe that both targeting calls vs UM this year were proper, by the letter of the rule, but....
To my eye, both Metellus and Hudson got flagged on near-perfect technique. In both cases they were on a dead run, lowered their shoulder and delivered a text book blow -in Metellus' case, with timing that you want in order to separate a receiver from the ball. In both cases, the ball carrier lowered and tuned (vs ND, fell) as contact was being made. By the coaching I got, the defenders would both be instructed to do it precisely the same way next time. If a guy ducks into a targeting call, that's the way the cookie crumbles.
Does anyone know if the guys are being coached differently since that rule was adopted? It seems like they're not...Harbaugh kind of hinted at it today, that's the way it's always been taught.
