After battling seizures for more than a decade, former Minnesota head coach Jerry Kill retired from his job on the sidelines, but still wanted to be involved with Gopher athletics. Apparently, the university didn’t feel the same.

Kill decided to part ways with the university after the two couldn’t come to terms on a new role for the former coach.

“I visited with the president [Monday], and it was very professional in manner,” Kill said, via the Star Tribune. “He would like me to speak on behalf of the university, raise money and teach a class or two. I really appreciate that offer, but I want to be involved with athletics. I’ve been involved with athletics my whole life, and I want to be around the kids more than anything.

“That wasn’t part of the offer. I understand that, but that was the deal-breaker for me.”

Kill’s contract had a clause that said the two sides could agree upon a $200,000 salaried position after his coaching days. Another medical-condition clause said he could step away entirely with a $600,000 lump sum — which he took.

Kill said discussions about a full-time gig “were never about money. … I’m more hurt by it than I am mad.” However, he left the door open for future opportunities with Minnesota.

“I love the university,” Kill said. “I’ll always be a Gopher. If the university needs my help, I’m a phone call away.”

I don't see how that's throwing Kill "under the bus". The university offered him a teaching position - that should be enough.

Can you imagine if Carr said "I want to be a part of Harbaugh's staff" and he didn't fit?

Good point. I think the President wants to give Coach Claeys a chance without Kill looking over his shoulder.

Hope we find a place/ role for Kill sometime down the road.

Yeah, doesn't seem like a big deal. It's a shame he has to step away from the field, but I don't think Minny needs to offer anything else.

Agree - I don't think Minn is doing him wrong. They want him to remain but just in a different capacity then what he wants and that happens. I do agree, when you hand over the reigns to a new coach sometimes you need to let them run on their own. Look at Barry Alvarez - that is one of the reasons BB left Wisci to go to Arkansas.

What does Kill's unacknowledged son Claeys think of all this?

They should have hired him to watch the damn game clock for the new coach since he can't manage time. I really do appreciate it though as a Michigan fan.
I predict that the clock incident isn't the last time we see Minny's coach lose it at an inopportune time for them. That was a mess-up of some magnitude.
