Talent Issues: It always boils down to DL, OT, CB, QB
It was hard for me to recognize or admit, but It is painfully apparent that our talent level is the first level problem,
We have had great recruiting classes but at critical positions we are very young (OL) or thin on talent (CB, DL), Injured (DL.OL) or inexperienced (QB).
Responsibility: Ultimately without a doubt, that is squarely on the shoulders of Harbaugh. His #1 job is maintaining a healthy talent pipeline.
RULE: You never have enough good OT's or CB's Take all you can all the time
I don't care how many you have. if a legit 4-star wants to come, take him. Take all you can all the time
Why?: I think it is apparent at this moment.
RULE: A offensive team will not be better than its QB.
In the 1970's you could have a quick athletic tough kid run the wishbone and be fine. Now you need a very high-level skilled athlete who is a great accurate passer. The offense is built around him.
Guys like Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, Mac Jones,. Kyle Trask, Zach Wilson, Spencer Rattler MAKE a program. If you don't have one you cannot play with the big boys.
RULE: College football is won on the LOS, The line that dominates will win
Get OL's and DL's who can dominate physically with their size and strength and athletically with their quickness or be dominated by those who can
The Foundation
Its not that the other positions are not important. You can have 5-star studs at RB, WR, LB, TE, K. But the success of your team is heavily and first built upon a foundation of DL, OT, CB, QB
Summary
Due to recruiting, youth or injuries, we are simultaneously weak at DL, OT, CB and QB right now
A Perfect Storm: Its a really bad combination right now.
Even Bill Belichick could not "scheme" around these talent issues against good teams. Opponents will go for the jugular from the first play till the last.
Its gonna be a really hard season
