For those of you who are old enough to remember “our” run against the buckeyes from 1985-2000, where we were 12/3/1 against OSU, 3 of the greatest wins (outside of the ’97 game) were the ‘93, ‘95 and ‘96 game. The shutout win against the # 5 ranked Bucks in ’93, the 400 yards rushing (TB with 313) game in ’96, against the 2nd ranked Bucks, and again in 1996 against the #2 ranked bucks in the Shoe, rank up there at the top, as Michigan ended their chances at an MNC all 3 years.
The Center on the Oline in all 3 games, Rod Payne, was a two-time first team All-Big Ten selection, and was named a first team All- American and elected team Captain and MVP of the ’96 Team. Rod flew up from south Florida this week for knee surgery at Michigan Othepedic Specialist arranged by former 96 co-captain Jarrett Irons and performed by fellow center on the ’93 team, Dr. Marc Milia.
Rod is now an area director for Fellowship of Christian Athletes in northern Broward county, in addition to holding team Chapels with the Michigan in the fall, as well as FAU, FIU, LaTech & others. Rod is having a real impact with young men in their journeys in athletics, but even more so with their faith. By witnessing and providing mentorship and support to literally 1000s of High School athletes, Rod is making The Michigan Difference in South Florida. It also provides Rod a birds-eye view on the type of young men who have what it takes to become a Michigan Man, just like himself.
Tomorrow, Rod will be at The Blue Leprechaun at 1220 South University # 109 Ann Arbor Michigan 48104 in “Bo’s Room” from Noon to 3 before the basketball game to have a few pops, share some stories (especially how Mo once told him (Rod) wasn’t Michigan material ;-) In addition to Jarrett Irons and Thomas Guynes, other former players, and possibly a surprise guest or two will be in attendance.
Rod will be signing glossies of the photo below from the 1995 game.
Also, please consider supporting Rod’s ministry in any way you can at the following link, every dime and/or words of encouragement and support from the Michigan family goes a LONG WAY!
Rod and I Hope to see you tomorrow- and as always Go Blue!
