When CMFT took over the Spartahhhhh program, one thing had to hit him pretty hard. Their roster was total garbage. And the reason was clear. Mike Dantni had stopped recruiting years before. And who could blame him? How could he find the time? Between defending himself and the university from lawsuits, being banned from recruiting in the state of Michigan by scapegoating and then burning Curtis Blackwell to the ground, getting called out by ESPN for recruiting alleged and convicted rapists to his roster, giving his assistants 1 year contracts to terminate when his 4 million dollar bonus check was going to be deposited. Dantni left skid marks leaving the Duffy center after the check cleared.
If not for the transfer portal, Spartan football would be crushed for a decade. But I realize I cannot have nice things anymore and am cursed. So CMFT got to pull the transfer portal parachute ripcord to refill his roster and have these mercenaries instantly eligible. Which is just a damn shame.
I would love and point fingers at all of the garbage he brought into the program. But that is not what I am seeing here. These kids are higher rated (some of them very highly), and most have played in positions where MSU is desperate for talent.
Here are the new Spartan Dawgs who have zero ties to the program, other than its better than the programs they came from? And all of them had offer lists coming out of high school better than the "Florida Keys School of Mining" that most of Dantni's kids did.
This is one of the biggest experiments in roster turnover and team culture creation I have ever seen. I would compare to Kansas State, but this is way different.
You have the existing kids who stayed through adversity, were recruited by Dantni who then quit on them.
You have new recruits of CMFT who were sold hope based on early PT and other, pre transfer portal
You have the toxic exit of all of the 25 kids who quit to the portal
You have the possibly toxic entrance of the 18 kids who portaled into the program, each with their own agendas.
On an athletics level, this version of MSU is far stronger than the one that was supposed to take the field at the end of last season.
me to take out the popcorn and watch the show. Never seen anything like this.
