The Basement was rockin in the Landfill today. Football practice is here. This is pre-season of hope and dreams. Hype springs eternal.
I have to say, my basement tolerance has been built up over a decade and is very high. This brunch research blew out my circuit breakers. I was overwhelmed by "could", "might", "potential to", "buzz that" and other hyperbole being used as facts. This team has had 2 days in pads, TOTAL, with this staff. Think about where this team is at.
On the dream team staff:
From CMFT: "Its not a rebuild. It's a re-lay, relay. Taking the baton from the previous staff" (Editors note: quote of the year candidate imho)
(editors note)
Thoughts on staff from Mom and Dad:
From Paul
From Comp:
Dantni threw the program under the bus by recruiting and quitting the way he did. AD Bill Beekman drove the bus back over the program with his debacle of a search. Covid parked the bus on body and carcass that was left.
Good luck my Spartan Dawgs. We will be watching...

- New staff that did not know each other until February
- Cobbled together at last minute by throwing money at a staff with very limited pedigrees.
- A 1 million dollar contract spent on a DC who had 1 year as DC at K-State.
- Few coaches with real track records
- Only 2 of them were from Colorado so CMFT doesn't know the other guys.
- No spring practice
- No fall camp
- No practice of any kid
- Spent the last month working on S&C and not practicing
- Never was able to install any scheme other than via Zoom.
- This week was the first DAY in pads. Or even practicing as a team on the field.
On the dream team staff:
From CMFT: "Its not a rebuild. It's a re-lay, relay. Taking the baton from the previous staff" (Editors note: quote of the year candidate imho)
(editors note)
Thoughts on staff from Mom and Dad:
- Harlan Barnett is back as DB coach (Editors Note: after failing at FSU). "The Best in the business"
- DC Scottie Hazelton. A "hard scrabble" coach. A throw back.
- "A million dollar coordinator. CMFT had money to spend and this was his guy"
- (Editors note: a DC from the Big 12?? from Kansas State?? )
- Quote from Scotty "we have a physical offense. So we have something to compare these guys (D Tackles) to."
- (editors note: rusted iron sharpens rusted iron. Socal4mich word of advice to Scotty "Use their OL as a benchmark at your peril Scotty...")
- OC- Jay Johnson. A major upgrade from Harlan Barnett. (Editors note: Jay has a 1 page Wiki page. Less is more clearly )
- OL- Chris Kapalovic - "one of the best in the country"
From Paul
- Do not have a good enough pass rush to contend for the B1G title
- DT is very strong and will overachieve over last year.
- Plugging holes around the lineup looks "doable" and "achievable"
- "we are going to hedge our bets this year so we don't look foolish" With a B1G only schedule it will make our record look worse
- "No panic in staff"
- "non-verbal communication from staff looks really positive'
- "hedging bets on OL after getting burned last 2 years. But this year, they can do it. Sneaky potential"
From Comp:
- Hard scrabble type of football coaches
- -Trying to avoid a 2016 type scenario where they were too optimistic and got criticized
- -Loves the DT situation
- - Jalen Hunt - "up to DT size" Might have been a guy who stood out in Spring Ball, but he's been on ice. "coming on well"
- - Jacob Slade - "super strong guy who can hold the point of attack"
- Kaylon Gervin - "Really good feet" a + athlete
- OL - Improved conditioning, experience, great new OL coach, "tired of being a sub-standard line", "Sneaky Potential", "wow, something could be happening here"
- TE's - "Well versed"
- A genuine competition going on
- Lombardi improved but Payton Thorne "competitive"
- Don't want 2 quarterbacks
- A twinkle in the eye sighting on Payton Thorne. Rumor.
- (Editors note: He played 3 snaps last year. He had that much potential that he couldn't win snaps from Lombardi )
